Default Booyah!

I have a small business and I've got a few jobs on the go right now, ranging from $5000-$60,000. With the economy the way it is work is getting thinner and thinner. Well about 10min ago I got awarded a 1/2 million dollar contract! It's not going to set me up for retirement but I'm extremely grateful to hook up with such a good contract with today's economy. Best part is, it's with a contractor we know and trust, one that always pays on time, and in some cases even pays early.

With all the posts of doom and gloom and layoffs, I'm happy to be able to post a positive thread.

Great news and good job. What industry are you in? Is it in home renovation?

Congrats! I'm feeling similarly optimistic from a contract I got last week, its not quite in the dollar territory of yours but is still the largest value contract I've had by a factor of 3. Its a modest commercial plumbing project downtown that's a great stepping stone for my little company, something that can look nice on my projects completed. I even got the HVAC portion to be subcontracted under me

The pendulum has certainly swung from some of the dread I'd been feeling for a spell.

I think I'll have to hire a couple guys, besides this job I have another strip mall starting up soon too. I've had up to 14 installers at one time, but I don't like having that many employees. I like having 5-6 guys busy. Easy to keep control of things this way.

I have the name and number of a fellow AO member who I heard is in need of some work that I would like to hire on. I met him once through the buy and sell, looked like he wouldn't have a problem lifting glass that's for sure.

I know the feeling bro. I just had a partner of mine end up with a huge deal as well last week. I am lucky enough he is letting me in on it as well. Took 2 years in the making but its a done deal now.
Glad things worked out for you

That's great news Caber! I've been at this for almost 9yrs now and I've finally gotten to a point where I don't have to be the lowest bidder to get the contract. We've been working with this particular contractor for about 4-5yrs now and we just finished a $150,000 contract with the same company in January that we weren't the lowest bidder but got the job on reputation. We must have impressed them again because they awarded us this big one on their own building.

The best part is o don't have to worry about getting paid!

I can relate, I detailed up my contract with specific terms of payment and the client went over and above and gave me a substantial deposit . The client is an old pal from long ago that I only see intermittently these days but that didn't guarantee the contract by any means, business is business; he has known me since I was but a young apprentice in the late '80's though. This will be the 4th location of his business, he has 3 successful locations going already. Anyhow I think it will snowball well as his business has tons of clients and I'm hoping we can cross-promote on our respective corporate social media pages. I have two time-lapse cameras I'll put up on site to record the job progress for fodder for my own corporate account, I'll be sharing the images with him. Of course I'll either blur out other workers or get permission prior to posting any; there will be tons of photos to edit but I think it will be great for advertising.

Thanks, I'm starting on this job tomorrow so that it does go smoothly. All the openings are guaranteed sizes so I can order my material tomorrow. All openings are the same size so all my frames are the same and all my glass is the same. This is a huge benefit for me, there won't be any searching for the right parts. This alone will save me almost 20% on my labor costs.

Way to go. There are still people out there spending money. The contractors in town seem to be keeping busy but here in the Bow valley we're in a bit of a bubble thanks to tourism and people with a lot of money who want to live here, not uncommon for a house to sell for a million+ and then gut it and reno to suit.

Always good to hear of a fellow AO'er getting some good Karma coming their way. You earned that karma with having a good rep so congrats on getting some solid work for the future in this uncertain time.

And 'Good On You' for doing so!

I've been through a good number of Alberta 'Busts' in my time, and it never fails to disgust me of how many *&^%$# people like to 'feed' on the doom-and-gloom, instead of focusing on the good and positive things, and the future.

Bottom line is ... if you can't handle the 'Busts' in Alberta, you don't belong here.

Good news is great to hear guys.

I just applied to go back to school myself since I haven't had much luck in the job hunt. Hoping I get accepted.

Thus is great to hear!
Congratulations you guys! With out the talk in the papers about the downturn, it is good to see a few bright spots!
I know our contractors have started a few jobs as well....
