The wood bison at Rainbow came from Elk Island National Park and where anthrax, TB, and Brucelosis free before being moved.
All the heads up to 2014 tested TB free and at that point it was a few hundred tested.
As for the wild herd outside Wood Buffalo north of Fort Vermilion, the TB issue is why its open season.
There is a herd at Charlie Lake, which is now protected, and has also tested disease free.
The BC herd near Fort St. John originated from escaped ranch animals, and also were disease free. The BC Government made a deal with the rancher, and split the roaming animals with the rancher, with the rest left wild.
I hope some day the bison put in by Nordegg / Banff National Park become a sustaining herd.
These things sure are tasty.
