Default Rough Runner

I have a '96 GM with the 5.7 (350) Was hard starting when warmed up so I changed the fuel filter, plugs(gapped), wires ($200) and paid the dealer to purge/clean the fuel injection system. ($250 !!) Now it starts hard always, idles rough and the exhaust smells really bad. Asked about 02 sensor but two shops didn't think so. What about catalytic converter restriction? Any ideas?

Default Map

I had the same year, and changed the Mass air flow, map and O2 sensors with no luck. Found that the idle screw had been played with so changed out the throttle body with no improvements. No codes were showing. The truck would sometimes stall at lights. My truck had a newer motor that I did not build, so had no confidence that the cam, timing chains etc. were installed properly so I dumped it on the lot. Told them all the grief I had with it. It doesn't happen to be red with a 4" lift does it? lol If so, cut off it's head and bury it!

If your exhaust smells bad there is a good chance your cat is plugged. It will act worse when warm as you described.I would drive the truck around with a fuel pressure gauge on and see if your losing pressure and go from there.

Seems to me that this was GMs attempt to get into the diesel business. They took the old reliable 350 and built a diesel around it, to end up with a Lemon. Surprised you still have one that runs.
