What fo you guys use for sat coms in the backcountry???
I had an old Spot Gen 2 I think and it just crapped out in me. Spot had offered me a new unit for $60USD which I think is a pretty sweet deal
Just curious what everyone uses though
Before you go shouting about Garmin inreaches though, read my tagline. I'm a tighta**e

Ive used Delorme InReach, Iridium sat and Globalstar
The first two are great.
Globalstar was one step down from a tin can with a string in the middle....at least the can and string were useful.....
I think Delorme was bought out but if the tech is the same, it was very good.
My go to is Iridium sat phone.

I'd take the deal you have on the table.
2 months of the "useful" InReach subscription will pay out that deal. Not even talking the purchase of the unit...

I have a Spot gen 3. Works as intended though I’ve never had to use it. Once a year I pay for the subscription and run a bunch of test messages to make sure it works.

Inreach
You can message people just like you normally would
Can suspend the service when your not using it
Works anywhere in the world
What’s not to like

Inreach works well. The wife likes it cause we can let her know how we are doing when sledding in the mountains.

I use the inreach mini up here personally. We have both inreach and spot for use through work as well. Most guys going further north run inreach vs spot. There’s a few areas where the inreach is definitely better than spot. You definitely won’t get that deal with an inreach however. Compare what the devices do and what features you’re looking for. If you’re going to really far corners, compare the coverage of inreach vs spot. But if that’s not an issue, then the spot works well and for that price can’t go wrong.

Smoke signals
I am too cheap to buy one of those fancy sat coms. I just go with the old school method of don’t screw up and you won’t need help
Don’t own a gps and rarely use a compass because I always forget it. So basically I have some bad habits but I get by

I just run a SPOT Gen4.
Cant message back and forth other than sending the pre programmed ones, but i never feel the need to anyway. I see it as a **** hit the fan item, or enough to let the wife know ill be late, but am OK.
Personally dont need one to do more than that myself

Thanks for the advice guys. This is essentially an item I carry so my wife will let me go by myself as long as I check in. Fiar enough I think. She still won't let me ho bear hunting up north by myself though. She's a great gal so I gotta tow the line when she has a reasonable request like that

It could be worse I guess
I just tell my wife I am going and she may ask if she can come but won’t try to dictate if I am going or not

I’ve never used one, but I’ve heard good things about Zoleo. Only real down side it the it is only a communicator and doesn’t have gps. Might worth checking out.

I have the Zoleo. Subscription cost is comparable to the onreach but the upfront cost of the hardware itself is much lower. Works great for messaging. I have yet to call in a rescue so I can't comment on that...

Recommend the Zoleo. Works as good as an inreach for less and If you have iHunter, you get a discount.
