As far as bighorns go, that particular ram is not hard to age.

Agreed .
Wildwoods did a good job in highlighting the true annuli.

He did. Thanks Wildwood.
Sheep horns growth is pretty cool. As the horn grows, the length of each older segment between the true annuli decreases in a mathematical pattern. Similar to spirals in sea shells. You don’t see segments get longer as the ram ages typically.

I would agree with that, the more I look at it I think there can be an argument that it's actually only a 6.5-7 year old ram. I think there is some underestimation of what happens in the first year and sheep can have good and bad years growth wise. Now on the other hand this ram is a good example of why it would be such a darn shame to move to full curl...
I would guess being that tight it wouldn't go much past 32-33 and where I hunt that typically is going to be a ram that is just past 4/5.

I think there is a lot of overestimating what goes on in the first year, especially from some experienced sheep hunters. A lamb tip is simply just a lamb tip, and if someone looks at enough lambs in the fall you'll see the size of them. Some people end up over estimating that first year and not giving them credit for a year and jumping straight to the 2nd annuli.

Realistically they are only a few months old in the fall but with them not putting much on in the winter and most nutrition just going to growing body mass ya that would be right if you look at it first spring to spring.
However I still don't think it's as easy to be 100 percent on that rams age as it seems.

No doubt its not easy to be 100%. Having them in your hands sure helps comparing side to side and the back of horns.

I have never hunted the bighorns yet but from the heavy research I’ve conducted on them the last few years, I would say between 7-8 years old. It would be handy to see a photo of his horns from behind him to get a better gauge on age.
