Archery wolf while elk hunting
Went out elk hunting this morning and as soon as the elk fired up, the wolves started howling about 1.5 miles away. To our surprise, the elk kept bugling and after a few close encounters we gave up and decided to try and kill a wolf instead. As we approached the spot where I thought we might encounter the pack, I noticed a wolf in the grass at about 35 yds. It was quartering towards me and I hit it either on the side of the head (teeth?) or in the shoulder, as the arrow glanced off. As we were looking for the arrow, 5 more wolves can over a hill in the trail, so we tried to cow call them in with no luck. I then howled and the pack fired up howling about 60 yds away, but the brush was so thick we were unable to get a shot. Once it became clear that the pack wasn't going to come into the open, we went back to tracking the blood trail of the first wolf I shot. After about 500 yds, we heard a wolf howl close by so I howled back and the wolf came in on a string. It ran past at about 15 yds, George cow called to stop it, and the wolf wheeled 180 deg back past me. As it went through a clearing at 15 yds on a dead run I was lucky enough to put a broadhead through the front shoulders. It folded up after about 50 yds.
We didn't find the first wolf; it was a shot I would have never taken on a deer or elk, but I thought a broadhead would get into the boiler room from any angle on a wolf.

Nice wolf!
Wouldnt mind having a shot at one of them, especially considering the lack of elk we've been seeing this weekend.

sweet story. Wish I was there. Sounds intense. May I ask what general area you are in to have crazy wolf encounters like that. Sounds sweet.

Wolves are a lot of fun to hunt but I hope I never see another one. I haven't really figured out how to hunt them but have been pretty lucky with chance encounters.
I live off the NE corner of Sturgeon lake. 3 years ago I shot 5 wolves and snared one and 2 years ago my buddy snared 8 on our place. From what I saw yesterday, there's about 10 in this pack. South of town they killed 6 wolves on the grazing reserve last week. I'm really noticing a lack of deer (both species) and moose this year; the combination of a tough winter and the wolves killed a big percentage of the deer around my place.
The one I shot had a belly full of something, and judging by the sound of the howls and the way the pack was moving, they were back hunting as soon as the elk starting calling.

Awesome story. Maybe not as tasty as an elk, but good to hear that your whittling away at the predator population, and with a bow to boot!!! Congrats!!

Grats .Wow a Bow kill Awesome good job!! also you can use a mouth elk call and squeel it like a elk caught and in a death call. they will come back quick(i have called in from as far as 1 1/2 to 2 miles away) .. i love howling too they will come to see whats up. i have brought the pack in a few time's. just last year brought in about 8 pulling out a Mulie buck at dark. you can do that howl at night right now with the Moon if they are with in a mile or two you will get a answer and can set up the next day to call them in.. just make sure no wind.. then have your wits about you because when you squeel or predator call in fall you never know what you may get !
Food for Thought

" I would not have taken the shot on a deer" Regardless of the animal do we still not owe the creature a quick death and well perhaps track what we shoot...and ensure it is put out of its misery.
Just stating a fact.....

I think he meant he wouldn't have taken a headshot at a deer and expect penetration, but on a wolf with a lighter skull a headshot would be expected to be effective.

IF you read my post you should have seen that I thought a broadhead would penetrate any bone on a wolf and you also would have read that we tracked it for over 500 yds before we lost the trail, even waiting half an hour for it to lay down and stiffen up before we followed it. As much as I dislike wolves for the 20 plus cows/calves/yearlings of mine that they've killed or mutilated over the past few years, I still try to kill them humanely.
An elk on the ground would have been better, but running into those wolves at close range was a pretty cool experience.

Great job NCC. I also would have taken the shot on a wolf but as you said not on a game animal.

Even though this is an old thread, CONGRATS are still in order. It was new to me today but memories like this would never get old if I had been the hunter.
