Default Bear Fence Experience

Does anyone have any experience with bear electric fences? I connected with a guy on my last hunt who had a system set up around his camp. Made he feel better when hunting alone.

What do you think? Does the current get through the hair?

I believe that's all they are good for... An extra peice of mind, i have walked bare legged into a nearly dead one before Hurt like hell, my dog walked into it as well seeing as he was beside me. He just took a few steps back and then jumped over it. If it were fully charged I'm sure the outcome would of been different. I wouldn't buy one, however i also would be alright with using one if someone else brought it into the bush.

I have a Gallagher fencer that I use for cows but haven't ever used one around camp. I have a battery one and one that plugs into 110 V. I know it works cause last year my wife accidentally touched it with the back of her hand. She said the muscles in her arm and chest hurt for 3 days after. Lol.

lots of outfitters in the deep backcountry here use them to protect the camp between hunts, seems to work. Too heavy for me to backpack into an area though, they have horses.

Smile The horse camps in Banff

The camps that the horse outfitters use in Banff use them around all their camps. I went down to the stream near one of the camps we stopped at to wet a line and saw what for me was a huge bear track and I hustled right back inside the fence. The fence didn't look like much but the cook said it keeps the bears out.

Just as well.

I have two of the ones from Cabelas that run on 2 - D cells... They fit into a bag about 14" long and maybe 5" around.. The only thing I have done differently is I bought plastic poles from UFA for instead of using the breakdown ones it comes with.. They claim the batteries are good for 30 days, but we usually change them out mid way through our hunt... We set one around the kitchen and one around the tent.. It is definitely a good piece of mind.. And they do give a good zap... I'd recommend them if you are in bear country...

One complication can be if a bear finds the fence for the first time and ends up on the inside.... Then can't get back out.

Default electric fence

I use electric fence when I am in bear country. I use a solar powered one. I have never had a bear damage my tents or gears. I had bear walk around the cook tents but never come in. When I am out hunting or away I know my camp is safe and protected. I been sleeping couples of times and when I got up in the morning there was tracks all around my camp. They never went through the fence. They work.

They get zapped when they touch their nose to the fence. We used them at tree planting camp and they work!
