Default Antelope Hunt 2020

Hey Everyone,

Anyone pulling their trophy antelope draw this coming year? I have priority 11 this year and thinking I should do it this year before kids start coming.

Anyone in the past, is it easy getting permission down south on the leases?

Post some pics of your Lopes!

Cheers,

What zones are you thinking of applying? Could narrow it down a bit. Overall permission across most the province is pretty decent for pronghorn on both deeded and lease. Sometimes dry conditions can cause some issues with access in fire years.

I don't really have a prefference. Thinking of 105-152 but I really don't care to much.

If you mean 150-152, the Buffalo Atlee grazing lease is worth looking into. It is a large lease, and I have always found pronghorn there.

Your better off waiting for a higher priority zone than just pulling a tag
Antelope hunting doesn’t take long
Have to scout them pre season and line up permission
Hunt is over 15 min into opening day

I've hunted the 150s a couple times. Shot my first buck there years ago and then my wife and father shot a couple there 2 or 3 years ago. I drew down south the same year with a friend.

Short hunt for my wife and father but we did good and had fun.

I drew my 4th tag in Alberta since the 80's last year priority 13 in 128/140, it's a good mix of grazing leases and private land, never had any trouble getting permission for either, good bucks were somewhat scarce, lots of 10 - 12" er's I wanted 14" or better, took a bit of scouting but found one, got him about 5:00 in the afternoon the first day, 5 blown stalks but finally nailed him at 327 yds with the 257 WM, hope I live long enough to get another tag, i'll be 80 by then, but they are a hoot to hunt.

2x free camping also at buffalo campgrounds my the river ,then travel 5 km south to crown land grazing lease which boarders the suffield fence. Nothing to big in there most around 13 inch tall . I aways go the day before opening and look for the one you want a lot of strange curls out there . Some point forward ,backwards and some are spread far apart. Its really what you want . i like the horns that point together.
Its the best meat you will ever eat ,as long as you get the hide off with in the hr
If you leave it on over night it will be very sage taste.

Nice animal - very symmetric and a real dark face. Lots of hair loss along his side though ? I like WMU 102 and also drew my 4th, and likely last Alberta antelope tag last year. That's if I make it to 80 ! They sure are fun to hunt.

Default antelope

I have hunted the southern zones twice 102-118 , the 150-151 zones once for archery and recently the northern zones in the 160s. All have their positives and different terrain in each . The last hunt two years ago was in the 160s and my wife shot a beauty speed goat on opening day.

Its cool that in Alberta we can either rifle hunt the rut in the northern zones in late September or the migration in late October down south. Bow hunts are early across all zones so that's another very fun hunt. I have only hunted the rut hunts in late Sept but one day want to do the migration hunt to change things up. The rut hunts usually are fast and furious as you are hunting doe harems with usually only one buck with them. The migration hunts tend to have larger herds with several to many bucks in them to compare and contrast size. Hoping to pull the archery tag this year with friends and give her an honest effort. Need to get a new string and some new arrows and get shooting. Populations should be up as long as the Spring weather continues to be fair. Good luck to all in their hunts and may your arrows and bullets fly true.

Enjoy it. It will be the last trophy antelope you’ll ever get to hunt in Alberta. Maybe take a kid along as well, as there is no way a new applicant in the draw code will ever hunt trophy pronghorn in this province.

My last buck on the lease was 14-3/8" and heavy, I have seen a few over 15" , but most of the bucks that I have seen killed on the lease seem to be in the 12-13" range.
