Haha I know, I had to double take at first. I've seen them around there enough not to question my initial thought.

I was just letting the people hunting the hills to take care when working into the wind or retrieving game the next day.

Then why do you keep coming back? If this website is such a minority you should stick with the majority......

I have pics of 4 of them last fall from the hills, there is a big un north of Demitt that's photogenic as well. The outfitter also has had 7 a couple years ago too.

It is an interesting photo. Someone mentioned the claws. They look pretty curved to me, that screams black bear. Same with the body. But the face and overall appearance say young(ish) grizzly to me. I would say I am 80% certain that is a grizz, but from that photo tough.

Here is another "saddle hills black bear" that I took a picture of from the chopper in the same area Albertadeer got his picture. This was last year.

I'd agree the above pic is a grizzly.

I'm not saying there are no grizzlies in the Saddle Hills, but the first pic posted by the OP is 100% big old chocolate phase black bear.

I wonder if its the other sibling? Looks about the same age?

For the past 4 years in October there's one that passes through my uncles cattle lease. We see him every year now. He must den up along the field edges. This is more towards Laglace. Apparently F&W chased him out of laglace last fall.

I'm sure there are grizzlies in the saddle hills though I don't see any grizzlies in these pics posted here.

I believe that the OPs pic is a grizzly bear. Hump check, block nose check, long exposed claws check.

The problem with Bears is they don't all look like what you see in the books.
We all know that Black Bears aren't always Black but not that many hunters know that a Grizzly can be coal black in color.

But that's not the only way they can look like a Black. Some Grizzly have the classic face profile, others have hog noses, some have classic humps, some have almost no hump.

One thing I've never found on a Black Bear is claws like that, and I've handled maybe a hundred Black Bears and seen a few thousand.

I'm not saying the Bear in that photo is 100% a Grizzly but no way would I take a chance on shooting it. It looks way too much like a Grizzly for me to chance my license and my reputation to prove a point not worth proving.

I certainly wouldn't shoot the bear in the OP's trail cam picture, if I was hunting black bear. Although I am not 100% sure that it's a grizzly, I am not 100% sure that it is a black bear either.

The bear in the OP's picture is tough to call. Don't think I would wager a bunch of my own money on what it is based on that picture.
