Grouse and rabbit success in Kananaskis today
I started hunting this morning in my favorite spot for grouse in K country at 10 am. Within fifteen minutes I spooked a rabbit from under a log and brought it down. Half an hour later I missed a Boone and Crockett ruffed grouse. On my hike out half an hour later I got two grouse in a tree. Later I went to another spot fifteen minutes away. I got a grouse two minutes after getting out of the truck and two more within an hour. That was my ruffle limit for the day. On my way back to the truck I saw three more ruffles and shot a second rabbit. I love first snow fall. Tonight I will be eating well.

Sounds like some good eats, JB. You must have a good spot.

Congrats! I had some luck this morning too, saw 5 but only got a shot at 3. Forgive me for asking but I'm curious. Is there a lot of crown land around k country? I always assumed it was a park so I never bothered hunting in that direction.

Congratulations
I love Grouse hunting, I am in K Country next time you want to go let me know. I use a Bow, have a shotgun but have not used it yet for this type of hunt.

It is mostly crown land. Just avoid road corridors where you can't hunt and provincial parks. Highway 68 and powder face are good

We had a great morning today in K Country ourselves....truck load of wood and took 7 grouse out of the biggest flock I've ever seen. Had to be 15 birds at least. Felt great to be in the sun! Hopefully these first birds of the season are a sign of things to come.

Not the same for me!
This is first year hunting grouse but I have hunted 408 last 3 years for deer. Spent about 5 hours between 2 days walking around different areas and didn't see a single grouse! I have been looking along gravel roads. It was pretty snowy still the days I was out (sept 11 and 12). I had convinced myself they couldn't be found till i saw this thread, any tips? Lots of walking, carrying a shotgun and I don't have a dog. Where you finding them on the ground with this snow or up in the trees?

Above story was the first and only birds I've seen in 4 outings since it opened. We spotted the first under a tree, then the rest near by.
I really think the snow messed things up, because Saturday was the first warmer, sunny day and we finally found some.
Grouse in September is always hard because of the foliage. Historically I have had my best success Oct 1-15th each season.
