I've not found them while hunting, yet -- though I'd like to. They seem to be a bit more elusive than Ruffies or Sprucies; but I have seen them several times in the upper foothills, and in the mountains. I was thinking of targeting them this fall, too -- certainly next fall when I've got my pup trained.

I think the numbers in your area are pretty good right now. Start climbing mountains and spend your time at the edge of tree line. That's where I see them usually. I carry a Hammond game getter when sheep hunting in the hopes of a meal of Mountain Turkey in the evening when I'm out. Pick a few gooseberries or huckleberries and make a sauce with your meal. Yum. That's living!!

Seen just one, south of grande cache, actually not far off highway 40. Missed, shot high My understanding is they eat berries until it snows then move up into the tree line/alpine to winter. Good luck and post pics if you find em.

I'm hoping the numbers are as good as the last couple of years. I only come across Blue grouse in the mountains. I see more below treeline than alpine. I often find them sitting up on a rock or stump or hunkered down under a shrub, they seem to believe they are invisible. They are by far and away the largest grouse around my area and pretty tasty as well. Can't wait to get my girls onto some this year, they are deadly with the .22 and the .17HMR.

I was out today and saw a pack of 5 just 2 hours outside of calgary while scouting. Of course, I didn't have my 22 or my shotgun so I guess I'll have to go back tomorrow

2 weeks ago I got one in the Crowsnest area by walking uphill about 2000'.... they were near tree line... love to report on flavour but a bear or cougar ate it right out of my bird cooler back at the cabin...
