Default A Warm Request on a Cold Day - Golden Trout

Hi All,

I’m looking to glean some information from anyone experienced and successful in catching golden trout. I’m not looking for locations, but more interested in best time of year to target them and what flies and techniques you’ve been most successful with. My brother and I are planning a trip this summer. This will be my third trip targeting Goldens. The first two I could spot them, got them to inspect all my offerings, but had zero takes over ~ 3-4 hours. Please send me a DM if you are willing to link up to share any information.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

I've fished for goldens twice, both times in early August, and caught fish both times. Not sure if that's the best time, but the bugs are certainly active at that time of year.

You don't have to worry about secret locations as they are only found in a few Alberta lakes and that's well documented

Michelle Lakes - Mid-July. Small dark nymphs - like #14 pheasant-tail, and small Griffiths gnats with a tiny bit of sparkle. From shore - didn't use the float tubes we brought. Difficult to capture their true golden colour on photographs. Next time i'm bringing a large zip-lock bag so that I can keep them in water without harm while I get organized and perhaps get better photos.

The lakes are only open for a short time and I don't think it matters too much when you go, I have gone shortly after it opens but that might also be the busiest time too.

Give yourself more then 3-4 hrs of fishing time, hike in camping gear and be willing to spend the night and next day if necessary. My first trip I got one in probably 20 minutes and caught a bunch of them. Last year I had to fish for almost 15 hours before I finally caught one then I ran down the mountain so I didn't have to stay a second night lol...
