Question Pork belly prices

Was wondering what people are paying for pork belly? I went to 2 different places and prices ranged from $6.50 to $7.50 per pound.

I saw that Sobeys in Calgary has a special for side pork at $4.88/lb. Sale ends on the 25th.

I was scared to ask after they told me the prices of the belly. The $6.50 was at a local butcher shop here in Stony Plain the $7.50 was at Friesons and Safeway in Stony Plain.

Urner Barry shows pork bellies at $1.73/lb USD this week. January 1st is was @ 1.38/lb USD that does not include any freight/storage/interest fees/Mark up for the supplier, but 6.50 seems a little high.

They may also be trimming it differently then it comes from the packer which would also have a yield loss, If it was ever frozen the belly will purge more resulting in more yield loss

I reached out to one of my contacts and if I were to buy a pork belly today would be 10.52/kg or 4.77/lb which seems more in line with the 1.73usd the Urner Barry is showing.

That said Jan/February Pork prices usually start to climb, we should see a dip in the market March/April then it will rise again through the summer. Next dip traditionally is Sept/October

If in Calgary we shopped with Don up on 17th ave se at his butcher shop. I think he supplies a great deal of the Chinese rest with their pork.
I want to say I paid just over 3$ pound . All fresh and let me pick the ones I wanted.
2 bellies were just under $100
If needed I can find out name of shop.
Busy place.

Picked up Pork Loins just before New Years at SuperStore for $1.77 / pound. They have the occasional sale on - I'll have to watch for the next one as well.

My hunting buddy gave me the idea to make my own bacon. Mmmmmm..... Bacon!!!
