Default The new fishing shack

I am thinking of a new shack this year. One that will host 2 ppl and stay warm i am thinking of about 4 ft wide , 6 ft high and 8 ft long that way i can still put it in the back of the pick up truck, Strap it on and get it there in one peice, Instaed of takeing it apart to transport and freezeing in the eary hours of the morning to assemble it. Throw the wood stove in there and warm it up while i drill my holes. AnY ideas on that? I have the wood stove its about 16" round and 16" long has 4" pipe straight up about 10ft in the air. i figure make it all out of 1/2" plywood and reinforce with 2"x 2" studs where i need them to keep the weight down.

What you described is exactly what we used to build in Manitoba for ice fishing. This is back 20 years ago....long before the days of flip-overs and ice-cubes! Best damn shacks that were out there! They were permanent and would last for years. Easily movable by one guy as long as they had a set of runners or wide skis on the bottom and a rope to either pull by hand or tow with the skidoo. They ususally sat a few icnes above the ice on the skis so all you had to do was drill your holes, slide into position and bank snow around the shack. You were in business in no time.

They worked really well and were always warm when that stove got fired up! Some of my best early fishing memories were in shacks like that. They are the perfect size for two guys and you still had room for gear.

Good luck and please post pics when you're done.

Yes that is a good idea, im from the toba too and that is what i built out here, i did sell it this past summer cuz i was moving but itsgreat, and not heavy like most of the by standers think. Last year when i was at the wabamun derby guys figured i needed at least 2 guys or a winch to load it but its pretty easy. Mine was 4x8 with 4 foot walls(that way used less plywood) and a fairly high peaked roof, all out of 3/8 plywood except the floor was 3/4 and used 2x6 for the skid and the rest was 2x2's. I have to resize my pics and will try to repost them.

Hillbilly, have you thought about a pop up? I bought one this year, sets up in like a minute, handles the wind great with ice anchors, and closes up just as quick, you can just leave it set up and drag it to another spot very easily too. couple hundred bucks and all those extra building hours you could be already fishing

See if this works, a link to a pic of my shack, and trust me its light! you can drag it all around by hand, and if you have something else then it gets even easier.

i dont know how much it would have wieghed, to load i would lift it up on one end till it almost balanced then use a shovel to hold it there, back the truck up till it almost touches, take the shovel out lift the back up and push it forward.

Further to my post:

I forgot to mention that when we made these shacks back in MB, the only piece of plywood was the floor and the roof. The walls were constructed from 2X2's and sheeted with wood panelling...you know, the stuff that covered your basement walls in the 70's! lol

That really cut down on weight and it is just sturdy enough to give you a solid shack. I think you can still buy that stuff..it's pretty thin but seems to last.

Wish I had pics to post...

Default Shack

That is similar to what we have, Plywood sides and roof with 2x2 studs. Has worked well for many years. carry it on a small flat bed utility trailer. Just load and unload just like a boat. Only difference is last year we added a small winch to pull it up instead of the boat winch.

Cool fishing shacks

Anyone got one of the Koenders plastic moulded shacks?
Have been looking at them and kind of think that they would be alright.
If a person looked after it should last a long time.
I have a homemade plywood and tarp popup and it has lasted me 15 plus years. Now the tarp is starting to rot and tear and the floor is rotting in it.

Flamans in Leduc sells them 1495.00 plus GST.

Yeah, I went with four holes. About 14" between the holes. Gives room for setting up my Big Buddy heater, tackle boxes etc.

Hope to stretch its legs in the next few weeks on Pine Lake.
