What and where are you fishing? Five seems like quite a few to loose over one trip.
Lost three over the last three weekends myself. One was tied by me and two by a buddy, so it did not hit the wallet, really. Still hurts, every time

Flies cost less than $1. So $5 lost. Unless you tie your own..then maybe cost less.

A buck per fly A decent hook costs a buck +. Depends what you are trying to catch, of course. But five flies per trip seems excessive.
Edit: wait, how many days is the trip? I am thinking of a day trip for whatever reason.

When I go creek fishing I have lost 5 flies in a run. Mind you it was all over grown. Good thing I tie I guess.

Everybody sucks on their first trip ever. Don't sweat it. Hopefully you didn't go to a creek like the north raven for you first trip cause that's just not fair.

I was up in the Northern Ghost area for an afternoon on the Waiparous Creek. One I dropped and couldnt find, and one I pulled to hard and the tip cracked, good bye fly! lol. The other three Im sure is my need to practice knots, which Im sure is my weakness, especially my leader to tippet knots.

Don't worry about that!
If you aren't losing flies you are trying the best spots. As Granddad said try to fish where the other guys can't and you will lose flies.
Now to really enjoy the hobby tie your own. Mine, over the years have got simpler and I'd say embarrassing. The only thing that recommends them is that they catch trout.
Some fellows here have great talent and tie beautiful flies.
One more tip from Grand dad, careful wading is way more important than long casts!

when I lose my articulated cone headed 3D eyed streamers on gamakatsu hooks..... I die a little inside. There goes $3 of material and 30 minutes of tying time

Hey, it was fun working on the accuracy getting under the brush. And fun is the entire name of the game.

Leader to tippet - double surgeon is easy to learn.
Everyone loses a few flies now and then, Icky fly works has good prices on their flies and ships quick so you aren't spending 5 bucks a piece, unless you're buying big articulated streamers.

Sound advice, that is a huge advantage over lure huckers being able to cast right beside over hanging banks, trees, roots, rocks and casting under overhanging trees logs and banks, that no lure hucker could ever get to. I get greedy all the time and get snagged all the time depending on the situation sometimes I loose the fly, 95% of fishermen won't attempt to fish the holes I hit cause look like some tangled mess of trees, to me it looks like an untapped gold mine!!! I've been rewarded countless times, to me, these are the best spots cause you never know what you'll tie into!!
