That respect doesn't carry through multiple generations once the onslaught subsides.
Look at Grizzly bears as an example, are they not becoming bolder in areas they are protected and outlaw hunting? In some areas the bears now consider a rifle shot a dinner bell and coming running to the sound, not away.
Yes wolves are naturally wary but any species can lose, or not develop a fear of man if they have no reason to feel threatened.
