Default Black Bears close to Edmonton

What is the closest they live to the city limits in your opinion?

Live or travel? Cougars and bears use the river valley through Edmonton.

I've heard the cougar thing within the river valley.

I have not heard this about bears.

There was one in Hawrerelak Park a couple years ago?
The river valley is a major travel route for many animals, including black bears.
But for yearly resident bears I'd say closest would be an hour away from Edmonton.

Ministik area which is a pretty big and Dense area holds resident bears. My buddy lives right on the north edge of it and would get bear tracks in his yard every spring. Also many people report sightings around that area each year.

I know of one that was roaming around Rolly View last summer.

There was black bear spotted a few years ago near Kinsmen Park in Edmonton. I've also seen bear scat in Terwilligar park. About 5 years ago I was coming into the city off Hwy 15 near where it joins to the Anthony Henday, it was around 1 in the morning, and there was a black bear in the ditch.

Had one in St. Albert last spring.

I think people would be surprised to see how many interesting creatures live among us.

Some are quietly removed before the public gets wind of them.

It's interesting to see how decreased hunting pressure has caused wildlife in urban fringe areas to flourish.

A CO I talked to told me they deal with a moose or two every week within city limits of Edmonton. Constantly deer and coyotes, etc.. Last year there was a lynx on the legislative grounds right downtown.

Bear live traps are sometimes set by Genesee and Warburg for blacks, about an hour away from Edmonton. I have seen good sized bear tracks right across the highway from the Devonian Botanical Gardens 10 minutes west of the city.

Grizzlies aren't that far away either. An hour and few minutes away. F&W have trapped grizzlies by Entwistle recently. Have heard of the odd grizzly being by south Buck lake and Modeste creek recently too. I predict a grizzly will come down the North Sask river to the city soon.

One hour north, east or west from Edmonton you will find very healthy populations of bears

I ran into a black bear along the Whitemud Ravine, on the power line trail running through Hodgson. He was grazing on the chokecherries.

I can vouch for that. Found grizz tracks when I was hunting near Buck Mountain last November.

I have a feeling that you are right!

I keep telling the kids that they'll be finding elk in the city in a few years.

Yup! Hunted a new area East of Vegreville a couple years ago and set up some trail cams, had bears on two of them. One of them was a gooder!
Wife told me last week there was a report of a black bear in town on the NE corner of Sherwood Park, didn't confirm it myself though. I know there is black bears in Elk Island/Blackfoot Grazing Reserve so a few are bound to get out and wander...

Saw a road kill bear north of Vermilion last fall. And looked like one tore through a bunch of bee hives close to a site I was working at by Elk Point.
