Default Scotland

Planning a trip that includes a couple of weeks travelling western Scotland & I would love to do a little fly fishing. Heard that there is no government required permit to fish for trout, but that most rivers / lochs have a local requirement e.g. local angling associations etc. Anyone any experience of this? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know where about you'll be going? It'll be easier to pin point what water is accessible at that time and for your budget. All rivers and most lochs will need a permit, and often -if it's a bigger river- different permit for different sections. Salmon can be extortionate and that could be for a few 100 meters on one side of the river, but that would be mostly on the east side. Some lochs are free, often when they are reservoirs. The sea fishing is free as far as i can remember.
If you know where you'll be you could start looking which water and where to get permits. What i think is most special about fishing in Scotland compare to here is mostly the remote lochs, the scenery can be stunning.
Pretty much all land will be private but there is a 'right to roam' in Scotland so you can access all parts, just be respectful and close cattle gates etc. And it also mean you can do wild camping.

Thanks for your reply. The area I'm particularly interested in would be the north west coast between Plockton & Durness. We'll be following the Scotland 500 route after spending some time on the Isle of Skye.

You might find some info here:
http://www.trout-fishing-scotland.com/
It should give an idea of what you can find, and look further for the place that interest you. I haven't fished that far north, but that part of the country is my favourite and I think the more scenic by far. And if you go after May, bring some insect repellent, if the midges are out you can't be outside, especially in the evening, without becoming crazy ...

Again, thanks for the info. The website looks good, &, as for the midges, I'll be looking for the Avon lady before we go!
