Tracking question-big feral dog-or Wolf?
I've been living on an acreage near warburg for a couple of years. and Im pretty decent at animal tracks, etc. know the local 'yote pack. but tonight I get home and hear about a strange darkish animal in the yard that ran off but waited nearby in the brush. tore up the garbage...thought maybe a dog, BUT...looking at the tracks 4 plus by 4 inch. stepping into eachother like most wild animals, pattern is Canine.
HUGE, not a coyote
-sorry no pics yet my cameras flash is broken. It did tear into my garbage, but all neighbors dogs are accounted for and do not track like this. I don't want to cry wolf...but in this weather and with predators desperate?, is it possibly a wolf? and yes I know coyote, wolverine, lynx, skunk, porcupine tracks and domestic dog.
Im not letting my pets out as they are acting strange about this as well......
NOTE the attached photo is not mine but they tracks are about the same in size and shape.
thoughts? other than waiting around with my shotgun?

Try calling him in, very simple process in calling to ascertain the difference...
First, dress up in camo, a white bed sheet will, do. You can cut holes in it for your eyes if you need to. It's way better than these expensive gillies suits they're selling.
Next bring a predator for call with you, but use it as your second calling option. Find the best ambush location in your yard and plop down there.
Finally, let out a long whistle, and yell, "HERE BOY, COME HERE" then whistle again and repeat. It usually takes about 5 minutes for a pet to commit. If that doesn't work, then pull out the predator call and call your wolf in and shoot him on sight.

Now I ask you ...WHY.???.. would you post a pic of this wolf track, that was taken off the internet. Just google..wolf tracks and tell me i made a mistake..

Or is this pic used as a comparison to what you saw ????

If its a big dog, its very wild-steps on its own tracks in a straight line-only comes out at night, goes back in the woods-no one around here has a big dark dog-but I suppose its possible. and still needs to be dealt with if its desperate and starving. also the animals are freaked by the scent of this thing...its odd
wish I hadnt sold my game cam.
oh yes my nearest neighbors have a great pyrenees and a large Rottie. I know the dogs, and their tracks-definitely not them

It's a cougar. They walk in a straight line with one foot track almost on the other. Probably an old or young starving one if its searching garbage.

That was my first thought....and my cats are acting very freaked by the scent around the house.
I have snow camo and a rabbit squealer. if it IS a cougar, do I call fish and wildlife? I know it legal to shoot a wolf or coyote on my property...

Check regs might be open in your area. Open in most of province now. If open buy a tag and have at it.

It is also legal for Landowners and occupants of that land to hunt cougars (but not trap) year round without a licence.

Thats definitely a dog track of some kind whether domestic dog or wolf. Cougar tracks are more rounded in the pads

the cougars in my parts sure don't have feet like that. claw marks on canine tracks aren't always visible i find.
