Trout Fly Fishing Net

Hey Fellas,

Just wondering everyone's opinions fly fishing nets? Recently broke mine but it was time for an upgrade anyway!

I think I would like to try a rubber net for both the fishes benefit and mine. Does anyone have an recommendations? Seems as though the prices go anywhere from $50-$300. Cost really isn't an important factor for me, I just want the most suitable net! I usually spend my time walking and wading the bow as well as the odd mountain stream. Your input would be much appreciated!!! Thank you.

My mother sent me one of his production nets about 6 years ago and is in still excellent condition. No fading or chips in the finish. Net bag is still perfect. I belive he has an option to put rubber net. I would recommend him to anyone. Beautiful craftsmanship and a decent gentleman from what my Mom tells me as he gave her the net for me after talking to him about my passion for the sport. Only issue I have found is that it is usually too small for some of the fish on the bow......😉

I had a bass pro wooden and rubber mesh net I paid $30 or so for and it's lasted through a lot of abuse. My other cheap option is a $15 long handled net that I took the cotton mesh out of and replaced it with rubber I got on ebay.

I bout a fishpond Nomad rubber net, composite frame.
I am very happy with it.

Check Canadian Tire, they usually have half decent nets for way cheaper than the name brand nets.

Tip 1: the rubber mesh is the most fish friendly, however, don't use them (at least the clear mesh) for pike - they can and will chew right through them.

Tip 2: get one bigger then you think you will ever need; I bought a very nice custom job for stream fishing with a 18" opening and a net that could handle a 22" fish. It's all great until you try and net a 28" PO'd brown trout.... would've been nice to have a pic

I recommend any of the Brodin nets. Little pricier but worth it in my opinion. Havent looked at the prices since the low dollar but I got mine 4 years ago and love it, 20 inch opening, 30 inches deep.

The fish ponds are sweet, a little pricey but way cheaper than my cheapest fly rod. I think they've got four sizes, and are extremely light and durable, wood ones not so much, just like anything you get what you pay for!

I'm a guy who landed five rainbows on the Sheep last Sunday...er I mean sardines. Not one over 6 inches. Pathetic. No net required.

Are nets really necessary for Cutthroat? I don't even bother with one on the Bow. I'd rather not take any slime off of the fish

Lose it at shore like all the other guys that fish without nets lol.

Bigger then what a lot of guys use but I like to catch bigger fish and hate when I can't land one. It is worth the little extra bulk imo.

Rubber dipped is definitely the way to go, they are cheap too. Hard to find any faults other then the little larger size but as mentioned there is a reason for that.

Thousands of steelhead are landed without a net ...but not those fierce 14" Cutts

I've seen/caught bigger...but not many. In my case, they were large...Lake Ontario fish that entered rivers in upstate NY to spawn. Google "Oak Orchard Creek Brown Trout" and you'll see what's possible. First huge male I ever hooked there busted-off at my feet~didn't have a net. Not every river, not every river bank helps make "tailing" a big fish easy. Especially if you use a long fly rod, and you're on your own.

If I could figure out to post pics I'd show ya a 27" brown I landed this spring in my fish pond I'm gonna say she was over 10lbs took over 20 minutes of saying oh god, dear god, please let me land this fish, biggest brown yet and the nomad/fishpond handled her like champ!

Where did you get your net Bill? I've been asking around and have heard the words Fishpond Nomad quite a few times!

I have a Fishpond Nomad El Jefe mid length net that is really nice and light. I picked it up at Iron Blue Bow in Calgary. The other net that I like for smaller Streams is the Brodin Gallatin Ghost net.

I like my new "Measure Net" - it has a rubber mesh with measure lines so I can scoop it out safely and don't need to touch it to measure if I want, the hook usually pops out of the fish in the net and I can snap a quick picture and put back in the water. Got this brown last week in Canmore. The replaceable mesh linings are very affordable - 25 bucks or something like that.

Necessary? Maybe not, but I would say a rubber net is the best way to handle a trout. Wet the net and this is effective in not removing the slime. slide fish in while still in water helps control a highly energetic fish while removing the hook.
In order to protect the fish further, this also allows me to release the fish quicker than trying to land a tired fish on shore. You can somewhat bully the fish harder in order to release quicker.

Also, tailing a steelhead is difficult to compare, as these fish are much larger and much easier to tail than a spunky 14" cutty or rainbow.

Fishtales in calgary, they have them at wss as well, but a better selection at fishtales, pretty awesome store, nice people work there!

My Fishpond Nomad, is the short handle model, paid $150, but it's a great net,
The El Jef, is getting up there in price, I think they are around $250.
