Default Cabin/outbuilding insurance

Anyone have insurance on your trap line buildings? If so does it cover in the event of a forest burning them?

Do not have insurance, but I believe you can apply for trapper compensation, although max amount is around $5000.

Yes, I have insurance on mine through Co-Operators. They consider it a remote seasonal dwelling off my house policy. The cost is around $ 500.00 per year to include the following coverage; $ 50,000.00 insurance on the cabin, $ 20,000.00 for contents, $ 10,000.00 for out buildings. Yes a forest fire is a justified claim on my policy.

Cabin cost aprx $17k in materials.
Fire, fallen trees are covered, but not vandalism.

Same here. Runs off my house insurance as a separate entity. One interesting thing is I couldn't get insurance separately. If I didn't insure it through the same company as my house, it was a no go.

When I insured my first cabin years ago I told the insurance I wanted it covered for $20,000. Figured that would cover the cost of me buying the material to rebuild and some fuel money to haul it there and rebuild myself. She told me I had to insure it for enough to cover the cost of a contractor rebuilding it as well.
When I had my log cabin in the Saddle Hills I had to get a quote from custom log homes for the rebuild including flying in the logs with a chopper. That cabin was insured for $220,000, even though I sold it for less then half that. I guess if it ever did burn I would have had a pretty fancy place

Cover the cost of the contractor? Yep that would drive the price up a lot. Down side is your insurance bill goes up too.

XP you might try get your head around Martin/Nordeggs trapline cabin cost. It included 25 chopper loads for one and 35 for other cabin. Chopper costs ranged from $1500 to $3000 per hour. Just do the math $50,000-$70,000 just for hauling in material before paying for lumber and building cabin.

Yep, like I said, I didn't realize those 70k figures for cabin insurance included chopper flights, etc.

I talked to our insurance agent yesterday and was told that no insurance companies are insuring structures that aren't already on a policy. Our cabin is new and on private land, we have 320 acres with about 220 acres of big bush, we were just going to add it to our home policy but were told no can do. Obviously am not very pleased and have sent an e-mail to Saskatchewan Mutual, who we've been with for 15 years or so, to hear it from them.
Fingers crossed.

If it's on private land Doug it may have to be insured on its on. May not be classified as a cabin like if it was sitting on crown land.

Farnese in Fort Saskatchewan writes for Intact, they will add it to your home policy.

Default Cabin insurance

Something else to consider is if your cabin is on private land is liability insurance. On my half section I have 5 million liability in case some joker drives by one of my no trespassing signs and hurts him self.Im sure that doesn't apply if your cabin is on crown land.

When I enquired about this a couple of years ago I was told the same as others have said..Yup we will insure you, but you have to buy a season ahead...ie buy this fall for next summer. I doubt anyone will sell you insurance now for this summer. (wawanesa)

I found out from Saskatchewan Mutual that they don't insure anything in the MD of Greenview. So we'll ask some locals who they use. One agent said his company would if we are at least 50km. from a fire. More research has to be done.
