Definitely true. We were warned by HSE in a large oil company about these tiny fish along with all the workers in the Amazon. Also the locals were totally aware of these. If you go down there be careful.

I was okay this year in the Amazon, I'm more afraid of bullet ants TBH

To the OP, did you read this article? It denies the actions of this fish and writes them off as folklore, as there has never been a documented or supported medical case. It also suggests you are more likely to be hit by lightning while being eaten by a shark, than having this fish come near a human. Beware campfire stories can be scary.
