Default BJ Penn's Comeback Attempt

Well that was hard to watch last night. MMA and its fighters have advanced so much in the last two years. BJ Penn looked like someone from a local amateur promotion. Proves that if Rousey or even Aldo started today, they would never even get close to winning the belts they defended for so long....

Dang, I missed it.

In BJ's defense, he wasn't too competitive the last time I watched fight a few years back so I wasn't really expecting much.

BJ had not won since 2010 that is basically the story.

Got to know when to quit. One of my favourites.

Yeah I watched as BJ was not even in that fight. That Mexican has some lethal legs on him!

As was painfully evident last night the sport is constantly evolving, the glory days of Harold Howard and Keith Hackney are gone. Diversity is the key, Penn looked obsolete in comparison to his adversary. Penn had his glory, now lets watch that Rodrigez tune that big mouth Mcgregor!

Harold Howard and Keith Hackney?? I was talking about how the sport has evolved in the last 2 years. Not its inception. LMAO

It's been a constant evolution, not just the last two years

I hope that JSP seen the light and walks away from the ring head held high and proud .
MMA has changed , the players have changed , no need to go into the octagon again .

Even GSP as great as he is, is obsolete now.

I'm sure they would have did quite well. More a matter of their number getting found out, and them lacking the flexibility to deal with that. That, and a few losses/concussions changes the game. When everyone is at the top and running 100%, with lots of competition, lose a couple percent, and a tenth of a second puts you in second place.

When he was on top the talent pool was knee deep so he stands out, that goes for Rhonda, Spider etc also, now that it is neck deep they don't seem so great. The Octagon is not something that you can return to after a break.
Even the champ Mcgregor now taking a break and allowing a interm belt well he's away, will lose when he returns.
The sport is just evolving too fast.

wasn't ever a fan of Bj penn. especially his lack of personality,
mma evolves so fast that these 'fossils' shouldn't attempt anything other than accepting what they accomplished and how they did it, read a book (or have someone read it to you), write a book, do a inspiring series of lectures, sit in wheelchair and swing your cane at passersby, just let your past successes be just that.
the shelf life of those fighters is measured in minutes in the ring, not years in the gym.

I don't follow MMA much at all, but I'd like to see that Scot knocked right out.

Is that an odd slight because he's Irish?

Default Underestimating

I think guys are underestimating how good he really was. He was the only fighter to hold both the welterweight and lightweight belts in the UFC, and I believe only one of 2 fighters that had belts in 2 weight classes. He's fought from 145 to 205, and lost by decision to Machida who was one of the top fighters.

He was a pretty decent grappler, good take down defense, and threw hammers. And let's not forget, that his career in the UFC was about 16 years long counting his retirement.

How long do you guys expect him to go? Not everyone is Randy Couture, but I believe he saved himself for his later years just because he started late.

Yes he WAS a really good fighter, but like others before him, his time WAS over a long time ago! There's no need to make a fool out of yourself after that much time away from the sport.
