Cow Elk
I almost drilled a cow elk on the highway in 166 back in November. It was the only one that I saw out that way.

I have not been out there for a couple years but from previous hunting partners I have heard of a large herd on Bullpound Creek near Shearness. That used to be zone 160.

In 3 years in 166 I can count on one hand how many elk I've see.

Walk the perimeter of the ecological preserve. It's majority lease land. Other than that, your better off to head to 162. There are a couple big herds around there but you never know where they will be from one day to the next. Its more prairie and open out there for glassing.

Cold weather
With the cold weather upon us, anyone seeing any elk, particularly in 166? I will be heading there for one last kick at the can. Last time I was there we met a bunch of farmers who were more than willing to help us out, just unfortunately the elk didn't cooperate!

Be careful in 166, The Steward's have all of the Imperial, Usher and the Ecological zone closed to all but foot access. That's close to 100 square miles of the nob and kettle landscape the elk seem to have liked in the past.

I agree be very careful. Read the regs as the Ecological Reserve is a NO Hunting area.

And the cows rarely leave it, particularly in daylight hours

Thanks for the replies. I wish I had more time to explore other areas, maybe once I am retired i will be able to.....(only 15 more years!)
Until then, I have to stick with areas I am familiar with, which is 166. The last time we were there we spoke with a few local farmers and they gave us some tips, and we walked the perimeter of the reserve, from the jakes butte entrance. Saw some tracks, but nothing live. I only have this saturday left to try for one, so I am hoping that the elk will be on the move out of the reserve, maybe hitting some bales and annoying the farmers......
