Me as well, I will not own a rifle with a blind magazine.

I'm glad I'm not this inept. I can even work the opposite side shifter

But for what they are intended, they are good guns.

Couple things,

First off Chuck, when you refer the the Forbes action you're referring to the action made by Melvin Forbes, not the one used in Forbes rifles correct?

Secondly, a blind mag does more than just reduce weight it stiffens the stock to help with the accuracy of the ultra light rifles.

I'd suggest Fish just buys a ULA/NULA and be done with it, but I know that's no fun for him.

I don't know a whole lot behind the engineering of actions, but I think what Chuck was alluding to was that Nosler used one of Melvin Forbes actions to test fire over 4.5 million rounds without a single failure. The way Melvin describes the science behind the strength can be likened to if you put 30psi air pressure in a McDonalds straw nothing happens, if you put 30psi in the room you're sitting in it'll blow the walls off. The fact his actions are small is what makes them strong, not to mention lightweight.

I have removable mags, drop plates, and blind mags with the removable mags being my least favorite. For those that don't like blind mags, other than the fact they make poor road hunting rigs, what's not to like?

The Forbes action is Melvin's action.

The Forbes action is designed by Melvin, not made to the same tolerances though.

There's a difference Chuck

Would one be stronger than the other?

Yes,

Hold your rifle an inch away from your shoulder and blast 100rds off the bench, then hold your rifle tight to your shoulder and blast 100rds off the bench, then tell me holding it 1" away from your shoulder didn't beat the shat out of your shoulder.

Any play will cause extra wear and the more play the more wear.

So let's say a 3 million round life.

The point is, if someone says these little action aren't strong they are as stuffed as a Christmas turkey.

Default Model 7 action

For just build I would check out , Pacific tool and die they sell actions and options
I had bought one in 7-08 changed barrel to 24" in 243 bedded action and modified a quick clip , extensive work, and it work very well . A gun I regret selling .

Yes, the little actions are strong, stronger per square inch than larger ones.

The only thing wrong with them, imo, is the inconvenience of unloading them when getting in and out of a truck.

Other than that, I love the Montana.

As for the arguments over balance, that is a completely subjective thing. Why argue over it? That's beyond me.

The price Madball has on the 7s is excellent. OP, I'd jump on that.

It's not inconvenient shooting 1/2" groups with an ultralight rifle though

I dug out some old targets the other day from a 7-08 Montana. Possibly one of the most accurate, and unfussy rifles I've ever had. Should have kept it, but a guy traded me a Cooper Classic for it straight up

I find kimbers too scaled down to be comfortable. Feels like a gun made for a women. Pencilly bolt, small bolt handle operated best with two fingers, mini wing safety, overly thin butt stock, very open grip. Not a lot of aftermarket stock options.

The montana has never appealed to me with the blind mag either.

I have three kimbers, two shoot great, the other one too after getting a new barrel. Keeping them for my girls to shoot when they turn twelve.

Lightweight being a nice feature, but never to be superseded by comfort or shootability.

I'd build a nice model 7, or even better, model 700 9 times out of ten over a kimber.

And that is my point. Gun fit, for, and comfort is TOTALLY subjective, so why people get in urinating matched is just beyond me.

Usually the white flag is waving long before before the urinating starts ...
