Default strike indicator

pretty new to stillwater fly fishing so was not impressed when told to try a strike indicator, never even heard of one before so had to look it up on youtube, the thought of putting a bright orange float above my flies horrified me, but got to say i'm hooked, works a treat, old dog new tricks comes to mind, any advice on the best ones to use, been looking at the fuzzy material type that comes with a tool to put it on the leader

there are two ways that I lake fish:

fishing streamers or nymphs on lake (various sinking) lines

and chironomids or leeches under an indicator

Both can be very effective

I have tried most strike indicators. I am a big fan of the Airlocks. Easy to adjust, does not slide, does not kink the line.

X3 for me and don't forget a swivel 3' above your fly otherwise you'll be chasing indicators all over the lake and you will quikly run out of the pegs.
I rig my still water set up in the following order (depending on depth) 15' of 8lb Maxima (indicator goes on this section) small brass swivel (preferably #12 black) 3' or so of 6lb flourocarbon, fly. I will rarely fish multiple flies under an indicator.

I've been using a 10ft 3X Rio Indicator leader then 5-6 ft of 8lb Berkley Vanish, slide on the indicator and tie in a swivel and then whatever length of Rio fluorocarbon tippet. And for no particular reason other than it seemed right at the time the indicator is upside down so the peg and the looped and pinched line is on the swivel/fly side. The peg will then stop the foam ball if you break off at the fly.

Some heavier mono up near the fly line sometimes helps with slipping pegs

Drill the hole through the peg to 0.100" so that it slides over smaller leader knots.
I use disconnect bobbers occasionally but really like yarn disconnect much better. No problem with casting or disconnecting.

I use the quick release ones, the Loon Tip Toppers, and Airlocks. The former works well if you plan in advance, and the latter two are easier on and off. I think the one you are referring to is the New Zealand Strike Indicator. Have been tempted to try it, but seems a bit pricey.

I'm old fashioned...corkie and a toothpick. For long leaders you just have to land the toothpick first. 15lb Maxima to a swivel and then 10-12lb Seaguar fluoro to flies. I don't think yarn will hold up my tungsten beads.
Taco try some Seaguar fluoro...great stuff

I second the Seaguar fluoro. Been using it the last two seasons.
