Question About Beavers
So I have some 330's set on a buddies slough (private land) that wants to get rid of nuisance beavers. I know that the "season" ends on April 30, but what if I don't clean out all the beavers by then. I'm pretty sure that I am still allowed to trap nuisance beavers all year round, but do I need a special permit? I took a quick look at the regs and don't see anything about this, but I'm sure the guys on here can supply some good info. Thanks.
Also, I have some 220's that I'm not using. Can they be used to trap beaver, or are they too small? Is it even legal to trap beavers with 220's?

There's a list of the certified traps for species in the back of the trapping regs

Actually, forget about the 220's. I can see that they won't work. I am wondering about trapping beaver after April 30, however.

Go with some drowning sets or drowning snares that is as long as you hold a resident trapping license. If not, you can shoot them I believe.

I may be wrong BUT I think you can shoot Beavers on your land or any land you have permission to be on . Now you should really call your F&W office to make sure .IF you have permission you should get it in writing , it is a form that the local F&W office will have , It,s called an authorisation to trap . It cant hurt to have that form with you any time you do nuisance animal control work , It covers your butt. I know I get it any time I do a job regardless of how well I know the customer . AND it is good for the one year only or the duration the landowner sets out for you . But Call!

By thew way , Dont waste your time with 220 , The least you should use is 280 or an eight inch trap.Best is 330
As far as snares go be darn care full , because they have to be submerged to be legal , You are better off to get a couple real good body gripper traps IE: Sauvageaux or Belilse, . and pick you spots carefully . A good Alberta lure is made by Forsyth of Mirror Alberta available at Halfords and possibly at Lethbridge at Trailsman firearms .

I think that after trapping season the land owner would have to get a landowner damage control permit and then give you written permission. Things may have changed too.
Call F&W.

Yes I do have a signed Form WA 19a. for this season. I'm just wondering what happens after April 30?
By the way, I think you have to get a new one signed every year, because unlike a WIN card or Drivers licence, your Trappers licence # changes every year. Never could understand why.

Always good to seek permission every year no matter what the activity.

From the regulations.
Quote:
Beaver may be hunted and trapped, without a licence and during
all seasons, on privately owned land by the owner or occupant of
the land, or by a resident with written permission from the owner
or occupant of the land.
|
No permits are needed, but it's a good idea to have proof of permission on you while hunting or trapping on private land.
Only submerged snares may be used.
280s are the smallest trap approved for Beaver. 220 used to be legal and I've had success with them but that is no longer legal.

I love the PDF regs, they can be searched in seconds with their built in search feature.
Now I download all hunting, fishing and trapping regulations in PDF form.

This is a form that I made up a couple years ago. Works well and have had no issues with using it.
