Default Stock weight affecting recoil ?

My little brother has a daughter that just turned 12 and 2 more kids fast approaching legal hunting age and I’d like to get them a deer rifle. I have a near new 223 savage axis with a synthetic stock that I don’t use. I was thinking of getting a wood stock for it and giving it to them to use. Should I find a wood stock or will not make a notable recoil reduction? Thoughts? I’m not against buying a different caliber but new rifle either

The heavier the rifle (stock included), the less the felt recoil.

Heads up on the 223. It is not legal as a big game chambering in AB.
