Default Cold lake

How long into the season do lake trout stay deep and require down rigging?

i have never seen them shallow ..
But I have seen them rise out of the water when the water is like glass for insects in 70 ft of water
Season for keeping end Sept 15

My son and I were there Friday and he was on a downrigger fishing between 60 to 70 ft. I was using a size 0 dipsey diver and according to the charts my best guess I was 35 ft down. He caught 16 I caught 12 so they are around. Went again Saturday and it was slower, just used dipsey divers again only a size 1 & 0.
Slower day at 10, but caught a couple jigging with the spot lock on..

Got a few tornados that touched down on the lake just a few minutes ago...I know tornado is if it hits land other term for if it touched down on water but there goes a few good trout...now if one lands on our lawn can we keep it?

It lasts as long as the thermocline stays stable. Eventually the day and nights get cool enough and a big wind comes along and thermocline is gone. Then the lake trout are every where.

Ok perfect. I am planning a trip for mid September and wish to downrig. I can't get away any earlier. Hopefully fall winds don't stir it up.

Just remember you can't keep lakers from Sept 15 to Nov 15

Good luck

Awesome. Thanks. Anybody got any tips on where I might start to downrig on this lake?! It is huge.
