Default Dolberg Lake Warning

My good buddy, Bobby B, took me out to this slough yesterday to get his new boat in the water. My vote was Wabamun. His vote was Dolberg. Seeing it was his boat and truck, we went to Dolberg.

Had the whole pond to ourselves. I found out why. Six hours of fishing and two scrappy little trout later we headed home. Being the gracious dude he is, he gave me the fish.

I just took them out of the smoker. Now I know why he gave them to me.

Have any of you ever eaten mud that has been kissed by mesquite?

I just did

Thanks Bobby B for insuring I had my minerals.

Keep it for at least 6 hours in saltawater and grape vinegar, then rinse it with fresh water before cooking. This is the method we use for muddy tasting freshwater fish.

Another way for lake fish is keeping it a few hours in milk. Milk is a rather efficient neutralizer, not only for odour, but also for many chemicals and toxins.

Hmmmm? Dolberg has always had the reputation of producing fish you could eat. I have never found them muddy.

Sounds like you had an off day there.

If you don't want to heed my heads up about muddy tasting fish, that's certainly your prerogative. However, if you enjoy licking salt on the side of the highway, like a sheep in a National Park, go to Dolberg and enjoy a shore lunch.

PS: I know you can't keep fish out of Wab.

PPS: I also know it was an off day. There were a few guys who had been camping and they said the bite just dropped right off in the last couple of days. We cut open the stomachs of the fish, to see what they were eating, and they were both empty.

I had a chance to spend two weekends on this lake one before lake stocking and 5 day stretch after the stocking. From my experience this lake seems much different this year than usual. I was catching some older fish but few and far between comparing to any year prior of this one.

There was also lots of dead vegetation floating on the surface to the point that the lake smells a bit swampy. It really seems that considerable partial winter kill is a real possibility.

I personally am not going back until the late fall.

The conditions on the day we fished were not great, it was very windy. So much so that my 55 lb thrust electric was not strong enough to steer my 14 ft. boat easily. It was a wrestling match every time a gust of wind hit us broadside.

Nonetheless, 2 fish in 6 hrs is disappointing. The bright side of it was the trout I landed was MUCH BIGGER than the trout Shane landed. I suspect that will be the case all summer.

Just being out was great.

Bobby B.
