Default Cabelas & Bass pro unite

This can't be good for competition, especially since wholesale has gone.. Might get a bit more selection now though.

Hopefully Basspro doesn't ruin Cabelas.

Bring this thread and that article back in 5 years and go through the changes that were not mentioned. That's the what they want you to know stuff. There are still things to sort out and a reason why many Cabelas staff are concerned. It should be interesting as it moves forward based on info I have seen and heard.

With no significant competition AND no other outdoor outfitter with as much buying power prices will almost certainly increase.

NOT A CHANCE! Precisely the opposite will happen.

Superstore had all sorts of selection until the drove the Ma & Pa grocery stores out of business. Then they seriously reduced stock. Now that Sobey's and Safeway, merged, stock is even lower. They are often out of many things, and where can you go?

Home Depot had amazing selection initially. Then the Home Hardwares and small shops were driven out of the major city markets, and stock dropped.

All the big box stores precisely track what sells, what doesn't, and how much it costs to keep unsold inventory on the shelf. Once major competition is driven out, they focus on what gives them the biggest margin, not on what consumers actually want.

Bla bla bla. Wish they would stock more specialty stuff rather than the Joe blow stuff. Like the fly fishing section in Calgary is a joke. It should be twice the
Size. The don't listen to thier employees. Just another big box store trying to put the little guy out business.

I just got that Cabelas email "Moving Forward Together". This is definitely not beneficial for us, the consumer. We can only hope they don't increase prices and "optimize" their inventories.

Are there any indie stores in Calgary that cater to hunting & fishing? There's a couple indie gun shops, and lots of "outdoors" stores selling clothes and equipment for hiking/camping, but it seems the only ones that do both are Cabelas/BassPro. Even Canadian Tire's clothing and equipment selection is very limited, though I wonder if they'll get more into that now that WSS is dead.

At least Red Deer has Wolverine Guns & Tackle.

High river has a great store called Flys Etc. Guns, bows, ammo, fishing and camping stuff. Archery lane.

Basspro is considering closing a number of Cabelas that are too close to an existing Basspro. Calgary store is certainly a probable candidate. Hard to say what they'll do about two stores in Edm, if they build a Basspro up there. At least one would be gone. I just hope Basspro has brains enough to expand their lines of product brands if they do close Cabelas.

As my tag line says, I live "East". I have purchased a number of rifles/shotguns at Sail. But they've got the "Canadian retailer" disease that killed off another Quebec/Ontario retailer - LeBaron's - last year. They live/do business in the '60's/'70's.

They've got a website which is confusingly organized (or disorganized) with just a small sampling of the line up on it. You can't actually buy anything from their website, just put it on "wishlists". They do list approximate inventory of product at each one of their stores online, on the page for the product you're looking for - example, for example at random, a Redfield Revolution scope. You get this message on the page "This item is out of stock. However, it is available in another store. Please note that we do not transfer items between stores."

LeBaron's website, to be fair, was even worse, just .pdf copies of each page which had to be called up individually. But to pretend to be a "with it" retailer in today's sales environment, yet so far out of touch with their consumer base is a recipe for a future visit with the bankruptcy trustee.

I like Sail, good people at the hunting/firearms counter at the store near me, but they've also lost a lot of business from me with their policies and stocking patterns. I won't drive a couple of hundred Km's through Toronto traffic to go to a different Sail store to get what I need, I'll find it elsewhere (at a higher cost, possibly, but less than the fuel & vehicle wear/tear to get it from them).

Wapiti Sports in Canmore has great selection for a small store and is owned and operated by sportsmen.

How do you know this? I have heard from Cabela's management staff that BP will expand Cabela's into new markets and keep BP as it is.

I read that in an interview at the start of the whole thing. I may still have the link somewhere. It even listed all the close stores by miles and if I recall Calgary was in the top 4 or 5 closest. They also said in their release most stores will remain but did not say all.

I hope Bass Pro closes. How they are still in business is beyond me. Hardly an online Canadian online presence. Store service is worse than no service at all. Cabelas is an excellent store, Wholesale Sports should have taken an example. They should have known they were being beat from the first time Cabelas entered Canada.

I was in Bass Pro in Calgary last Friday, and on going through the check out with 1 box of Nosler Partition bullets, was informed by the cashier that she needed to see my PAL.
I told her that they were bullets, not ammunition, and she didn't need my PAL.
She said it was a new policy and she needed to see my PAL, at which time I told her she could keep the bullets, and the other item I had, and walked out.
Is this some new law the government or the RCMP is trying to introduce, or some Bass Pro idea, or was the clerk mistaken.
My wife said I should have asked to see a manager, but I was too ****ed off.
Has anyone else had this issue on buying reloading components?
I bought some bullets at Bass Pro 6 weeks before with no need to show my PAL.

Curious....why not just show your pal?? It would have taken 10 seconds vs how much time you spent going there, picking out your stuff, and storming out.

Sorry for the detail just curious.

Can't remember exactly where the article about the closing of stores close to each other was for sure, WSJ or something like that, as I remember. The article was a fairly lengthy commentary on the pros and cons of the whole deal. It mentioned stores that were underperforming in areas close to an existing Basspro, stores that were just too close to each other. I dare say, the Calgary store is likely doing OK, but, is it affecting the Basspro store? Probably is, but, if it is doing well enough, they likely won't do anything, a good income from both stores will likely keep them both going. Probably cost them a lot of loot to close or move that store in the near future, likely cheaper to keep it open for a few years, get it paid for, and get a bit closer to the end of whatever penalty agreements they have on the property.

I was at Wholesale Sports in Calgary to check out their business failure sale (no good deals) I spoke to a sales staff from Cabelas who happened to be in the store. Told me the Calgary store was not doing well and there is talk of it going the same way as WSS.
