I have 4.5-14 Leupolds on 4 of my rifles. I have never regretted the higher power range and usually have time to turn up the power to max. You can always turn the variable down, but can't turn up a lower powered scope.

Folks that talk about low light performance and FOV being an issue really don't understand how optics work... Again, just turn down the power.

Bdc 2nd focal plane reticles work at one magnification only (typically max). If you turn it down the lines will not be the same holdovers. This may or may not be important to some people. If you just have a crosshair and no lines then its simpler, but a lot of people enjoy the benefit of etched holdover lines. Makes for consistent measurable shooting. Therefore, dont over magnify your scope. You will be required to be in that tight view for all ranges that use your holdover lines. 8 to 10 power is great top end.

Call this thread Lazarus.

I've knocked down Moose to antelope out to 550m with a 2.5-8.

So since I'm a Savage fan and bought a Savage model 14 American Classic.... I'll be looking at a gloss finish scope

Was thinking about power range for this .270wsm, as it is a new caliber for me..... And if I should bother with the Leupold Boone and Crocket reticle on a .270wsm....i own other ballistic reticles and they seem to work ok.

Was thinking...

Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40mm w/ B&C reticle
Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40mm w/ B&C reticle
My first two 270WSM's with Tikka T3 LS models back in 2005 (one for me and one for my then fiancé). I had the VXIII 4.5-14x40 with BC reticle, the other had the 3.5-10x40 with BC reticle.....LOVE IT for this caliber-works great with 140gr Accubonds.

Sold these 2 rifles to my Fatherinlaw and Brotherinlaw with I bough the caliber in a Sako rifle.

My choice would be the 4.5-14.

I have a VX3 4.5-14x40 mounted on my Sako m75ss 270WSM.

...just looking for a scope that will be able to match the 270wsm's abilities... even if "I am not at that level".... So I can work my way up to it without making more that one... Large scope $$. Investment
Fixed 4x or lower

especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.
