Default Hunting legality question

Going grouse hunting this weekend and I'm struggling to find info on this;

How far off the road do I have to be to hunt? I'm not a "truck hunter", but I have found a cut line that runs parallel with a road that holds birds.

Also, how far away from a provincial park should you be?

Thanks

Noob or not still must read carefully. See red and bolded info.

discharge a firearm from or cause a projectile from a firearm to pass along or across:
a) a provincial highway (this designation applies to all former primary and secondary highways),
b) a road that is paved, oiled, graded or regularly maintained, unless
- the road is held under any active disposition under the Public Lands Act or under an order under the Surface Rights Act, or
- the person is hunting game birds with a shotgun under the authority of a licence.

Note: if there is no identifiable ditch or fence to mark the outside edge of the roadway, then the roadway extends 20 feet from the edge of the traveled portion.

Maxxid, good on you to ask. I too when I first started, even though I read that rule, kept asking just to be sure. Second guessing myself.
When hunting grouse with a shot gun, yes you can shoot them on the road, or in the ditch from the road. As long as it’s safe to do so etc etc. Like highlighted above.
Good luck on your hunt. I was out today and didn’t see a single one.

Make sure you pick up some grouse tags. I heard it the CO’s are out in full force looking for them...

Hope u guys find lots. It will take a few hard frosts to push the grouse out to the roads. From what I have seen so far their are very few grouse around this year so we probably won't have to worry about running out of tags.

Just make sure you're not within 200 yards of an inhabited building because that will supersede this rule

discharging a firearm within 200 yards of an inhabited building

It would be nice if the first time hunters course asked more questions about the regulations, and about the Wildlife Act, to encourage people to look up the Wildlife Act. As it is many people have no idea what the Wildlife Act is, or where to find it. You can't obey the regulations if you don't know what they are. There is no way that a person can ever learn all of the regulations from asking other people, you won't think up enough questions to even ask, and then there is the issue of people passing along false information. And people that believe the false information are as much to blame as those people that spread it. Yes it takes time and effort to look up the regulations, but it is worth it to avoid being charged for violating regulations that you don't know existed.

Default A couple of additional points

If the road(s) are under the authority of Alberta Lands, they make the rules and
the rules become the regs. Not F&W! Also, highlight the section in the regs that Elk pointed out and put the copy of the regs in your glove compartment so it is handy. I learned last fall that there are CO's out there that are not as knowledgeable as they should be. So, it is good to have quick access to a copy of the rules.
