Default Problem Elk

I will contact Fish and Wildlife tomorrow for more information.

I was contacted by a farmer who recently has been having a heep of trouble with elk pounding his hay stacks and destroying all his cattle feed. Can he shoot some of these elk? Does any one have any experience with this type of situation and how did you handle it?
Thanks Cam

NO he CAN NOT shoot the elk. That would get him in a pile of doggie doo doo.
He will need to contact SRD and they will come check the situation and advise an action plan.

Dont know alot about it but im sure he cant shoot any. In our area F&W used to bring out bang cannons and scare the elk away. And they used to subsidise but the farmer had to have let hunters in during hunting season.
I know a couple farmers that were turned down because they did not allow hunting.

Ya, fencing is the ONLY way to stop them...i watched as a herd of 100+ fed around a propane cannon, they get used to it in about 3-5 days...

Hard to believe this story. Please provide GPS co-ordinates and a permission slip to me no later than Nov 1st, 2010.

At least... have your buddy / farmer apply for a landowner permit next year so he can harvest and enjoy some elk meat. Before F&W scare them off.

My ancestors did not have to buy a tag just like indians. I have no rights like that so why the hell do they? I hate this subject. I think it is the government being racist to everybody other than natives. If I had the money I would fight the government over this. The problem being is that the F&W will suggest calling the local native band, who then come in and shoot all the bulls off the herd My ******ed ex-wife did this last winter after their pitiful attempt at fencing didn't work out so well and this was the best F&W could come up with.

Agreed...
nothing like some reverse racism giving a minority the "liscence to poach" for fear of being a politically incorrect government.
I though aboriginals were the first stewards of conservation??
anyways, thats off topic...
back to the elk problem....
maybe a few predators should be introduced into the area?

I've heard of them doing that in other areas as well.

Pretty short sighted on SRDs part.

The large bulls get shot, everything else in the herd disperses for a while then come back.

Same problem minus a few animals.

If the prey (elk) is present the predators (wolf/cougar) wont be far behind.

isnt there a program that goes through our widlife resouce funds (wild life certificate funds) that fish and wildlife will supply and build game fences around the feed yards???
and why dont this guy take a few wrecked bales out to the edge of his fields to keep the elk off his hay stacks??? or did he leave his bales scattered all over the field????

A friend of mine had a similar issue with deer eating the bales. He phoned the local f&w and they brought out a bale wrap that is suppose to deter wildlife. It seems to work so far. I don't think it cost anything. If I recall correctly they had to sign the roll of wrap out from the f&w but they ended up just giving him the rest of the roll so they didn't have to go back and forth.

Another way is to allow hunters to go in and shoot them during hunting season, within reason, otherwise your next post will be "How do I keep hunters off my land!"

question does the land owner allow hunting?
is yes then look at F&W to help
if no then he is on his own...cost wise.

Does this farmer allow hunting on his property during hunting season,if so as said before on earlier post , the Fish@Wildlife will supply fence, landowner will have to setup fence.
SRD, and Fish@Wildlife must be notified first.
