Default CRV? Rav 4? Or other smaller SUV

Gotta have SUV.
Kids killed our minivan.

I’ve been looking at 2008 Rav 4 and CRVs

Gotta get something pretty dang soon.

Rav 4 looks good Cept the 2008 has supposedly some kinda ‘oil consumption’ problem...

Anyone have any experience with either vehicles.

Just going with those 2 due to their reported reliability

Several friends have the Rav4 from 2008-2012, and none of them have had any issues. The v6 has great power, and the mileage is quite good as well.

Both are really good-so i tested more than a few used CRVs this spring & showed up & exited each test in a Toyota. Really liked the CRVs though ended up picking up another Toyota.

Ranching family where I board horses are rough on rigs own 3 2nd hand CRVs & swear by em.

Both solid choices, so the winner of that 11 year old vehicle challenge will be which ever one you can find that was well maintained.
My 2002 CRV was written off due to hail damage last year. Sad to see it go-4cyl 5spd manual. Hidden picnic table in rear. Bought it used in 2006 with 60k km. So I drove it for 12 years. One clutch, shocks, brakes, rotors, serpentine belt,2 batteries and a oil pressure sensor in the time I owned it.Over 300k km and still got $5k in the buy-out.
Negatives are not enough power for towing and the door locks were a source of grief.

The RAV V6 likely better if you need to tow anything.

Still kinda have an 09 Rav, sold it the daughter.

275k replaced one seal and the rear shocks.

I am a big fan of the Rav but, take a good look at the back door. Installing the spare on the door creates great space, but the extra weight wore on the hinges. I think it was a design flaw. Plus, wifey found it heavy.

Make sure that is solid.

Thumbs up Rav & CRV

.
'Rav vs CRV' ... all things considered, you can't go wrong with either.

For small SUV's, I wouldn't buy anything else.

Just had to replace the wife's vehicle 2 months ago. Narrowed it down to those two as well and after reading a crap load of reviews and test driving the CRV first, we only made it as far as sitting in the Rav4 before we made up our mind. To us, the CRV just had a better fit. Can't put my finger on particulars, but the interior design and space was just better laid out for us. Didn't bother driving the Rav4 even. We've got both in the family, with me on my second Tundra, and my kid driving a Civic, all have been very reliable.

2 months in and she's still very happy with the CRV. Taking a bit of getting used to as it replaced her old Q5, so there is a definite drop off in power and finish, torque especially, but it's getting her where she needs to go. On the other hand, the Q5 was her 2nd Audi, and we won't be rushing back for another any time soon.

My 2003 ford escape (mazda was bought by ford) V6 has been a champ but they switched to a crossover in 2012.

One more vote for either. Personally, I prefer the 4Runner because it is bigger and has V6 power but you may not need that much vehicle. Of the smaller SUVs your two choices are definitely the top of the pile.

Big Racks - hear you about the Audi. Any German vehicle is hard to live with when you start adding up even regular maintenance costs.

I have owned two Rav 4's and they have been my main vehicles for almost a decade now. The V6 model is fun to drive and there is a surprising amount of interior space (more than the older model 4runner) for hauling stuff which works great for my fishing gear. I like the side opening rear hatch and external spare as it gives a bunch of storage space and allows me to open hatch with kayak on the roof (this is a huge pain on many SUV's).

I am not so big on the new Rav4's though. They appear smaller and aren't near as fun to drive now that they got rid of the V6.

When I look for my next vehicle I will probably take a peek around at any new options that catch my eye otherwise will probably look for a good shape lower mileage 2009-2012 V6 Rav 4.

Edit: That all said if you prefer comfort, fuel economy etc over acceleration, handling and interior/roof rack carrying capability then the CRV or newer Rav4's might be a better fit.

You can sleep in a Rav. Tough to do in a CRV.

Good choice, was going to comment on our 2012 but too late...tho I'm sure either brand if well looked after and properly maintined would be a good bet.

Enjoy the new-to-you ride. 4 or 6 Cyl?

It had fairly low km's (around 130K km) for just over $13k, the dealerships were asking about the same for a 08-10 RAV-4 Limited with similar mileage. I liked the RAV's better because they had a bit more drivers room, and I liked the side opening rear door. She didn't, so she drives the Lexus. Will likely keep it until it dies, as it's been pretty cheap to operate so far.

Good choice Bessie. Only seems right that now you'd post a pic of you on the hood with the shaved chest. Do it for charity. Maybe post on the Oilers thread. I sense a winner.....
