I won’t use anything other than coated Dewey rods.

A quality cleaning rod will run you >$50. It's a good investment. I use Dewey rods as well.

I have/use both SS and coated rods for the past eighteen years ... probably averaged 3000+ rounds per year ... average round count between cleanings probably about 40. Average number of patch throughs per cleaning maybe 20 and sometimes the same number of passes with a nylon brush. I have no evidence that SS rods are detrimental as long as they are proper fit (do not flex to touch the bore), and are not permitted to “drop” on the exit point at the muzzle (too frequently). Like any tool, if used properly there should not be an issue. Regardless of the type of rod, it is important that the jag is also a proper fit to insure there is no shoulder to catch on the leade which could be problematic. That can be made a non issue by using a patch that envelopes the jag enough to keep everything centered.

Buy a Dewey one piece 17 cal rod. I use them to clean the 17 and 22. Better room for the patch using the 17 caliber Jag.

One word of warning, never use small caliber Carbon Fiber cleaning rods. There are more than a few guys who have put the broken end of one of those through their wrist of forearm. I got rid of even the 30 caliber fiber rod after the 22 Cal one Grenaded on breaking.

I use a Dewey 17 cal rod for my 22 and use a thread adapter so I can use 22 cal brushes or any 8/32 threaded brush or jag

20 cal Dewey rod for me.

Here's what CZ says about cleaning rods.

Quote:
Our 22 LRs use our cold hammer forged and lapped barrels, and are built a bit tighter than many other guns. In 22 LR we run a .211 bore, which is one of the reasons our .22s are known for incredible accuracy. This also means that a .17 or .20 rod and jag are required for cleaning, since a .22 rod will be too large.
Also, a bore guide is helpful. Some 22's will scrape off the coating on a cleaning rod.

Fixed your statement for you.

You aren’t cleaning diddly with a boresnake!

It’s like wiping your butt with hula hoop, you really don’t get anywhere but you do smear the crap around.

Like reusing toilet paper over and over.

The problem lies in what people think barrel cleaning is.
They think if they see a shiny bore with no signs of lose crud visible by looking in the bore with the naked eye, then voila it’s a clean bore.

Those of us who have had top end rifles, shot in extreme conditions or competitions, or have had access to optical bore scopes, have seen what using the proper potions and lotions with proper jags and brushes can bring.

Inexperience and naivety rule supreme in these threads.

How to educate the beginners and the ill informed is a constant.

I didn't like my 17 cal Tipton CF rod, I hope you like yours. Use with caution.

I tried to warn him how dangerous they are too but he has elected to not listen and go that route anyhow. Kind of makes you wonder why they ask. Wish the OP all the best.

isn't a $50 rod worth the investment when the rifles we are cleaning are worth 100's or 1000's of dollars?
It's like guys spending 80g's on a truck and buy 99 cent oil. If you protect your investment you will enjoy it for many years..

Very glad to help. I got off lucky when mine broke, no major punctures and because I was wearing glasses no pieces in the eyes. Honestly, there have been so many serious accidents with Carbon Fibre cleaning rods I am really surprised anyone still sells them. I would have thought the lawsuits in the States would have put a stop to that. Same old story I guess, as long as there is lots of money in selling them, they can cover the costs of a few lawsuits.

I will continue to use my Tipton carbon fibre cleaning rod happily, just finished up with it in fact. Your concern is valid but I check it over for nicks before use and I don’t get all rammy jammy with it because I understand the material. The carbon fibre arrows I and just about everyone else uses with compound bows are far more dangerous IMO.

Yes, the arrows are far more dangerous and so are CF shafted golf clubs. I don't use carbon Fibre anything because of the issues with it. Two close calls, cleaning rod and a golf club, is already using up my quota of luck. Don't feel like pushing it when there are so many quality alternatives.
