Default The Phenological Fly

Has anyone read the Phenological Fly by Bob Scammell? I read it a few years back. Wonderful book. I was wondering if any of you folks have done your own study on the timing of hatches with the appearance of different wild flowers. Do they seem to match with Mr. Scammell’s findings?

Hatches like everything else in nature has a time to bloom, have sex, give birth.
These activities timing are driven by both latitude and elevation.

Oh man yes!

Salmon flies come out when the Arnicas are really happening.... they for sure will be happening when you can find morels by the river.

Reliable BWO hatches happen when the shooting stars are out.

I really like to watch for the birds to detect hatches more than anything. Robins will cue in on and actively hunt stoneflies.

Waxwings will also do these.... but they'll also gather for mayfly hatches as well.

I ignored the signs yesterday and hit the river b/c it was clear..... did alot of water flogging and watching... but it was still a great time.

This works great for local streams and there's a bunch of things I've picked up on over the years. What I haven't unlocked yet is something more like "I just saw this flower blooming in Calgary so it's time to drive down to the CP with a handful of Salmonflys."

I'm starting to think that might not be realistic

Its a great little book, really accurate for the streams I fish.

You ShOULD be heading to Red Deer for them salmon flies.

There is no salmon fly hatch in the Crow.... they all got wiped out in the... last great flood. It’s true. ... fish got killed off big time as well.

No fish here. No salmon flies too. Save your gas $.

Stay away.

Sounds like typical Bessiedog BS here! I'm coming to the Crow with limit kills in mind!
