Default Yeti coolers, are they worth the $$$

Are yeti coolers worth the cash or is there a better one out there?

They are quite good but you can do 90% as well for a lot less money. I have a Coleman Marine Extreme from CT that can keep ice for 3 days and a smaller Engel for day trips. All together that’s maybe $150 worth, a Yeti the size of my Coleman would be $600.

Here’s a five day test done in Florida.

I have an Engel 240 that I've owned for the past 8 or so years.

In 25 degree weather I can keep ice frozen for a few days. Or 4 deboned deer cool enough to get back into town to cut up.

They are good. You can get other coolers for 100 dollars less that will do the same job. They are a lifestyle brand so its good for instagram making you look like you live an intense outdoor life.

I was a skeptic until I got my first yeti cooler as a gift. I’m definitely a believer in them now and have multiple products. I’ve got friends who have other products similar to yeti but it’s a coin toss if they are better or not. (Some we’re definitely inferior) What you do get with yeti outside of the brand name is a product you know will do what they say it will. I’m hesitant to believe a lot of reviews or comparisons online as many of the you tube crowd have bias one way or another towards a brand or price etc… You also don’t know what type of controls they have for a fair and equal product comparison in many of those reviews. Yeti is one of the very few high end products I’ve become a believer in and am willing just to spend the extra money initially.

They are expensive that is no secret. BUT i use a small one in fishing / boat day trips. I use no ice i just put the cooler in the freezer the night before. Viola frozen minnows stay frozen, sanny's n drinks stay cold etc. It also doubles as an extra seat for others in the boat, that way i can just use the captains chair and free up the other pedestal seat space.

I own a lot of yeti products and there are top notch. However, my Tundra75 cooler is not what I expected. I prechill items and have my own ice machine as we travel a lot with a fifth wheel toyhauler and mine does not hold ice like I expected it would.
I only use it for drinks..., beer, water, beer, gatorade, beer, ......
It is a big heavy cooler and priced around 650 bucks. I did not pay that!!!!!

A lot of water even by day 2 ?????
It does not retain ice any better than my coleman extreme 5 day that was about 100 bucks. Honest review .

Purchased Yeti cooler from sponsor on AO 15 years ago. Still good as new. Likely pass it on next generation when I am gone. Remember those refrigerators that lasted 50+ years. There are still a few around. The Yeti will likely be one of those 50+ year coolers. Once and done.

Rotomolded

Thick insulation makes all the difference.

So far my cabelas cooler is doing fine. Holds ice a long, long time.

Trick with all these coolers is to…

1. Put ice in it the day before to cool the interior.
2. Put fresh ice in it the day you leave and remove the priming ice
3. Cool or freeze all items before departure
4. Ensure cooler is full…empty volume makes it melt faster
5. Never leave open long
6. Keep out of direct sun
7. Use milk cartons and jugs for frozen ice… basically always use block ice…never cube.
8. Sort cooler so stuff you need last in on the bottom…first on top.

I am a believer in block ice as well and pre-freezing my cooler.

My simple Walmart special small cooler is about 16" x 16" ....I simply put it in my deep freezer at night and in the morning my frozen water bottles go in first, then lunch etc... easily lasts a full day on the boat.

Keeping out of direct sun is a big key. If opened make sure lids are closed all the way. I do not own a Yeti mostly cause of price. We always find a way to cover it to keep sun off. The small one for day trips in the boat we put two towels over it. No problem with melting. Mine are mostly Coleman 4 of them and different sizes. 6 bags of ice 4 days and still got ice and yes water. Water really great for cooling off in hot weather. Oh ya for the ones who use your hand held Yeti mug to keep your beer cold for hours, your doing it wrong with your beer. JMO

I wouldn't take it as far as comparing it to a coleman Xtreme though haha

Forgot to mention, if you get one of the coolers the lighter colors keep ice longer than the darker ones. Plus they had an issue a bit back with the darker colors delaminating. A buddy of mine who is a fishing guide had to send one back because of that issue.

The wife won a big bunch of Yeti gear last summer. Got the M30 soft cooler. 4 of the Rambler 30oz tumbler, 4 of the Rambler 20oz tumblers and 4 of the beer can insulators. Had a couple Yeti mugs already so we are well stocked. Best insulated cups we have. Had our eye on the soft cooler but there was no way I was spending $400 on a soft sided cooler. But it definitely is top shelf. Fill it with beer and ice on a Friday and there is still ice in it on a Sunday (no beer though!). Only downfall is if you fill too full it’s hard to close and weighs a ton.

I however can as I own and tested both..... but I know where you are coming from. I buy many items based on reviews and own high end products. I believe in you get what you pay for and buy the best you can afford etc.

Even on this forum I do not post negative . Maybe I expected more from a 660 price tag cooler.
Mine is white, best color for retaining. I make my own ice and put a lot in . I keep in trailer out of sun and only have 3 trips in, 7 nights and mine is less than expected .
My beer can coozies, coffee cups, etc all by yeti are worth every dime .

Mixed feelings on the cooler . Honest opinion and review. I am not giving up on it and will experiment with it more .

Have never tried a Yeti but am pretty happy with the 100l Lerpin we got a few years ago. Went with the big cooler as I planned to only use about half of it for food and the other half for block ice and some cubes mixed in. After a week in average summertime temps the large majority (I'll say 90% plus) of that ice will still be there. It's been pretty impressive imho. Underwater Kinetics sells them, can't remember what I paid but it was no where near what Yeti asks.

Downside is the molded handles suck on this particular cooler and she is a heavy bugger when loaded up that takes up a lot of room in the truck bed.

I have a 45 litre Yeti which is about 10 years old now.
Yeti was first in with a super strong cooler.
I have no regrets with it, but they are over priced .
I would look around and save some money if I replaced it..
I think a lot of the hype around outdoor products is complete Bull****.

Here's another option, fairly new product. Besides the cool colors, very good quality, keep ice for days. We bought a bunch of these for work and all I hear is positive comments.
Most Canadian tires carry them, but do not show on their website.

There are several better coolers out there. All cheaper than the yeti. I'd personally buy a Coleman extreme. $300 cheaper and ice retention is nearly on par.
Yeti is way, way, way over priced to say the least.

Not enough bang for the buck.....it’s a brand name with a hefty price to it.

For drinkware, Yeti is the best. For coolers, I prefer Pelican. Similar ice retention, better latches, better handles and roughly $100 or so cheaper for comparable sizes.

And an unconditional lifetime warranty that is second to none!

Love my pelican coolers, worth every penny to me.
