Default Sewing holes in hides?

I have a dog with a hole the size of a hardball in the side of it's head and I'm wondering if I need to sew it up to make it esthetically pleasing or can I just leave it as is.

Close it up the best you can....this will prevent the hide drying with sharp edges of skin exposed....which could possibly make it insaleable (is that even a word??).

I took the head completely off a fox and they wouldn't accept it, saying the sharp hide edge would damage others in the tumbling process.

Default stitching

If it will fit on your stretctning board and hold together leave it, but a couple of stitches never hurt the end product, I use cat gut that we pull apart for thinner pieces. use a smaller gun next time lol

I've talked to some of the warehouse staff with NAFA and Fur Harvesters and they all said to sew it up. Any holes should always be sewn, according to them anyways. They are the ones who have to grade our furs, so better take their advice.

I only used a .223 to take it but it was a v-max bullet so when it hit the bone it blew up leaving a mess in it's wake.I guess this one gets a sew job.Thanx for the info fellas.
