Gaiters for still hunting?
Looking for an advice here. Need some gaiters to move in the snow. Knee high, or so. Something that does not make noise and preferably waterproof. Does it exist?
Thanks!
Edit: also most shoes I am going to use them with have flat bottoms with no hill, so the gaiters cannot be dependent on the bottom strap for attachment.

Not a store bought type of gators but... Smoke tanned otter skin or sealskin would make the nicest gators. Maybe beaver. Fur is warm, fairly waterproof and the leather side can be conditioned to be totally water proof, and fur is quiet.
My friend has a pair of sealskin gators that are like two pant legs to the crotch. A loop through his waist belt to hold each of them up. He got them in the high arctic somewhere back in the 1970's.

Sounds like a great idea. Who could make it and how much would it cost though? Folks from New Newfoundland should be familiar with sealskin gaiters I would assume.
I am not concerned about the warmth though. Mostly it is the snow that turns the pants into frozen tubes below knees after a couple of hours of walking in the bush.

Almost Any "nylon type" material is going to be too noisy for still hunting, unless you cover it with something quite like fleece etc.

Quiet gators.
Kryptek makes some real nice quiet gators. The only downfall to them is they pick up a lot of burr’s.

A light weight set up to this is :
Large rain suit pants. Cut the leg sections off long.
Fluffy inner sweet pants inside.
Large cammo pant legs outer.
Water proof rain pant legs in between them.
Fasten loops at the top so they can tie off on a belt or suspenders.
Elastic band around the bottom to keep the snow out.
Water proof the cammo outer shell with 50/50 kerosene / wax mix, or Spruce sap,,, heat it up to apply,,, let it cool off or dry before use.
Or use material silicon spray. Then fit all 3 peaces together.
Simple quick, fast and easy.
Try to find outer material that is sound scuff proof.

just got some this year. store bought, not natural material. i put on long underwear, put boots on, then gaiters, then light camo pants over everything. i was also weary of noise, et. this method leaves your walking no louder than just pants. works like a charm. i can use ankle high light comfortable boots in knee deep snow. dry after 4 hours of hiking.

I swear I've seen pictures of Jim Shockey doing exactly that!
I think he does that for his wrists as well.

First lite gaiters have worked well this year. Got 8 yards from a decent mule deer buck wearing them. Not sure if totally silent and durable go together in the gaiter wold....except for maybe sealskin ones.
Cheers

Where the heck can a guy get fur snow pants. I want a set. I can't find any online. Would a guy just have to commission them from someone?

You can try this. Don't wear the top or you may get shot. Or a group of Sasquatch hunters taking over your favourite spot.

This sounds like an idea. Wouldn't you collect a lot of snow with wool though? I like the idea that you can just take them off and throw a new pair on if driving to more than one spot at any given day.

That's my thought as well.

I do not know if it is that simple because I am not entirely sure I understood it
Also, wouldn't rain pants be a sure thing for sweating? One thing I am trying to avoid the most out in the bush.

I do not like boots that are that tall for walking. I want to keep it ankle high.

Maybe worth a try. Not sure if I want an extra layer. I wonder if the outer layer will turn into the frozen tubes though.

I got a couple pairs of gaiters for my wife and I from Wholesale Sports.
Can't remember the brand but they work great. I normally wear them when it's wet outside so I don't mind them being "noisy"..
