But hes sure going to look good on the wall. Its been a long 4 years and alot of sweat and many days on a horse. I had a legal ram 2 years ago at less then 150 yards small tight curl real light and i wanted a bigger one so i let him go. To watch him 2 days later be hauled out by an outfitter and probably right across the border.

tw,
Nice ram, F&W held the ram for three days that would have had me nervous to say the least. Nice to see they plugged it.
As for the boys that did the leg work and pointed you to the ram don`t you think it`s fair to "NOT" take your dad into the spot they sent you into? This is the reason I never send a friend into sheep pockets.
Just saying.....
My first post here but had to stand up for the buds who actually did the original work to find them.
Congrats on your first ram tw.

The incorrect aging of rams at registration is a Big Problem for sheep hunting's future.
ESRD is using age and horn size data to push for severely restricted regulation changes, a big part of their argument is that rams are taking longer to reach legal size. The over-aging of rams fudges the data in favour of these changes.
I hope the mistake was a 'mistake'....

I share your concern completely. What the heck can we as hunters do about it I am wondering. Is it a scam that they are trying to pull to support their bad science or what. Can a supposed trained individual call that a 6.5 year old ram or is every legal ram just rubber stamped as such? Makes me wonder.
I also apologize to TW for not congratulating you on a fine ram. I was just kind of stupified that they would call that 8.5 or 7.5 as stated in the earlier post. That ram had tremendous growth. Good genetics, good mothering, good feed etc. There are rams that make book at 5.5 years, not just south of the border, but right here in Alberta. The whole genetic bull crap argument they are pushing is just that.

Ya I see what you guys are seeing now. The one at the base is a false one that I counted as age 8.I still see 6.5. I usually go by where there 4 years lies and depending on where it sits is were I get that age. They say usually if the 4th year is higher than the eye that they are usually over 8, and the opp. for the 4th being highter.

Awsome Rams DiamondH!
While we patiently wait for the next round of Rams, let's revisit the age game.
This is what I see. A view of the back of the ram's head would help determine any false annulie.
Tip to first line, 0.5 years, plus four more years= 4.5 year old ram at harvest.
Where do you guys differ on the Annulie to get 5.5 or more?
Rackmaster, got a picture of your better-half's 4.5 year old ram handy?
This is Weird. Picture will only show here upside down. All is fine in photobucket.... Mods, is the forum still having issues?

I think that ram had a bad year, looks like his 3rd year may have been a bad one with little growth.
Hard to tell without seeing it live! I would be suprised if this ram is 4.5, If that is a bad year makes more sense, if he`s 4.5 he would have been a dandy by 7!

That works really pretty good on thinhorns, but I havent found that it works too amazingly well on bighorns in my experience. I've got a bighorn in my house thats 4.5 years old and 35" long and about 1-2" past full curl.
But ya....on thinhorns that method seems to work really well.

Dale I think I was adding in an extra one between his .5 and his 1.5 year mark. I think I'd agree that the ram pictured could be easily 4.5 years old rather than 5.5 as I had originally thought.
Here is a pretty easy ram to figure out....the field pics show it well but this pic shows it even better.....
