Only a very limited number of elk have tested positive for CWD along with 1 moose. Almost All are deer, mainly muleys in eastern Alberta along Sask border.

In conversation with one of the local Fish & wildlife biologists I have been led to believe that the strain of CWD found in the local deer population is not readily transferable to elk. IIRC there have been no positive results from elk harvested at Suffield.

Three cow elk CWD positives out of 361 tested from Suffield in 2018/19.

CWD does appear to have become established in this herd.

No deer harvested on Suffield, elk only so you can see 3 last year and 1 each year the couple before that. On the upside it’s been around for a few years and those elk are herded right up and it hasn’t spread really fast, hopefully the incidence stays low and it doesn’t transfer as easily among elk
