338 Sherman Short mag. Its based off a SAUM case with the shoulder pushed back, 40 degree shoulder, longer neck and body taper blown out. To keep it a true short action round with a 250 Berger its overall length to the lands is 2.970. It would be even shorter of course with smaller bullets.

With the shoulder pushed back it can seat the bullets out of the case to not eat up powder space. Expecting at least equal to if not better velocity than a 338 WM, efficiency is key. It will be easy on barrels too by using less powder (reduced recoil as well) and a sharp shoulder to reduce throat erosion. The developer has a whole line based off the 270 win case (think Ackley improved but better), as well as the saum case.

What kind of velocities can be expected with this cartridge?

2850 plus with a 250 Berger but yet to be verified. His other short mag versions are tried and true performers so expecting good results. His 338 version with an '06 sized case hit 2950 with a 250 maxed out.

Hornady and Ruger have made the need for a wildcat larger than the 6.5 Creedmore pretty much redundant. Of course if you don't like the Ruger 77M rifles you could do a custom but the Hawkeye stainless, at under $1000.00 at Prophet River, would more than suffice as a guide gun and has CRF. The 338 RCM has likely been the most overlooked cartridge and would be right on the heels of a 338 Win Mag with the Hawkeye in 22" barrel or not far behind if you prefer the 20" barrel. If you feel the need for overkill then you could go with a 375 or 416 Ruger.

Ive been playing with the 338 RCM, very neat cartridge. Using starting load data its a mild bush thumper, when fully loaded it wakes up. The factory ammo is a big step up in power. Its neat having a trim 20 inch iron sighted rifle that slings big 338 diameter pills. Its trajectory is not bad, making 200 yard shots on gongs a breeze. My favorite bush rifle. Now they have released the 6.5 PRC, also based off of the 300 RCM case. Id be interested in one in a lightweight back country rifle.
