All this driving seems to be paying off. I hit up Ben from the AOF after seeing a post he made about catching some nice fish from the North Saskatchewan River. And it lived up to the hype!

The last thing I thought I'd see that day was a Sturgeon jumping straight out of the water like a fricken missile!! And I was even more excited when I found out I captured it on camera as well!!!

Hard to tell from video so I have to defer to your first thought on being a sturgeon but to me it looked like a pike.

I am the other guy in his video and it was definitely a sturgeon. I've seen and also heard stories of guys seeing Sturgeon jump right around the area we were fishing.

I was casting right in the direction of where that fish jumped, Timid didn't actually directly see it exactly, it was more to his peripheral but its pretty crazy the camera caught it.

I was able to make out its tail and it defintely had that shark style tail rather than a pikes paddle.

That and the coloration of it was that pure milky brown, no real stripes.

I hope to god I can catch one of those beasts one day on the river.

A friend of mine who was a biologist told me like salmon will often do, they believe they do it to loosen their eggs. They spawn in June/July depending on water temps too he told me. But I really have no idea? I have seen it once when one about 5' long leapt completely out of the water in front of the boat. We were in 36' of water at the time. Looked like a missile going airborn.

My understanding was that Sturgeon are one of the few fish species we have here that have Swim Bladders that allow them to regulate by gulping air above the surface.

Perch and walleye have swim bladders.
Edit.... I think I know what you mean now. Yes, the sturgeon is such a primitive fish that it can't regulate itself like modern fish.
