7mm-08
Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a new rifle mainly for White tail and mulies. Can you let me know if 7mm is good enough for these deer, or should I get .308? I've never shot a 7mm before just curious of recoil to. Thanks in advance

Do it, and don't look back.
The 7mm-08 will effectively take any critter you'd ever consider taking with its sire the .308Win.
The 7mm-08 is the twin to the 7x57Mauser, and the 7x57 has taken all manner of game on every continent on the planet.

Is 7-08 a popular caliber or is it getting more popular? Just from everyone I've talked to no one seems to mention it. It's all about the magnum caliber now

There are many 7mm cartridges, and the vast majority of them, including the 7mm-08, are an excellent choice for hunting deer, as well as larger game. The 7mm-08 produces recoil that is less than the 270win, or 308win, although the larger capacity 7mm cartridges do produce significantly more recoil.

The 7mm-08 cartridge seems to becoming more and more popular, and as a caliber, the numerous 7mm cartridges, including the various magnum versions, make it one of the most popular calibers, being used today.

I call it the Manny Pacquiao of cartridges, it hits way above it's weight class. It is an inherently accurate round imo, parent case is a classic, and it won't punish you with recoil. I've taken deer, elk, and even a bison with it (bison was in corral, helping a rancher put one in the freezer, but still worked splendidly). It will take anything in North America you care to shoot, just match your bullet to the job. My Remington 700 (Boone & Crockett) really likes 140 gr pill, couldn't group 150s for beans, and tended to throw 120s about as well. I like the 140s, Ballistic Tip or Hornady SSTs (139 gr) for deer (and coyote as well, but that is another story) because they expand quickly and dump the energy in the body nicely. I use either the Nosler partition or TSX, TTSX on elk and (hopefully one of these days) moose. My biggest problem is, my daughters like shooting it too, so I get relegated to the .300 WM or the 7mm Remington Magnum when we hunt together. Both of which also work quite nicely for me. This topic has been brought up quite a few times, but I will chirp in with a positive 'AMEN' every time, because I just love the cartridge and it will probably be the last one I shoot, if my shoulders get too old to handle the magnums....it just gets the job done, like Manny did.

Good to hear about the positives of this caliber, I have a .300 WM and the recoil ain't a lot of fun some days, so a smaller recoil is always something to look forward to. I think I had my mind set on the 7mm and your input just solidified me buying one. Now all I gotta do is find the rifle that fits me best.

that all depends on your budget you could go with anything from a entry level savage axis to a sako. all depends on your budget just make sure you put a good quality scope on it that the most important part IMHO.

I have a sako A7 in 7mm-08 and LOVE it! all in with a three hundred dollar scope, I think it was 1050 at WSS. There was a 50-100 rebate on it though I believe, that was a couple years ago. I was only 15 when I got it, and the recoil is really easy to deal with, but it still packs a lot of punch. Only downside is it can be a little pricey if you don't reload, but it's a great cartridge.

I have the same rifle and it's awesome. I've been experimenting with loads with it and so far so good. Never taken an animal with it yet though.

That's my future plan is to start reloading, been looking into it for a hobby, bit pricey to get started but would be fun to try all kinda of different loads.

You could consider a 7x57 as well..
I'm shooting a Sako Hunter in 7mm-08 and found the ammo reasonably easy to acquire although I reload for it now.

7mm-08 is great, my kid used one for 5 years, very accurate cartridge with minimal recoil.

My buddy picked up a Ruger American, and it's a tack driver. From everything I've looked into them online and a lot of guys are saying they are shooting better then their higher end Rugers. I haven't read a bad review on them. We picked it up at a store in Edmonton for $400 (pm me if you want their name, not sure if they are a sponsor here). But you you can certainly get it for under $500 most places.

I too have this rifle and it is an awesome gun. Light, low recoil and accurate as can be, I'm very pleased with it. I don't find the ammo any more expensive than any other premium ammo. Mine seems to like Federal Premium and shoots 140 gr. Nosler Partitions really well, mind you it is the only ammo that I tried but it worked so well I've never tried anything else.

seven oh eight!
PERFECT all around Caliber, especially for deer. I bought one about three years ago and love it. I took my cow elk with it last year with one shot, only ran twenty yards. The recoil is a nice feature too, light and easy to shoot.
My preferance for rifle for dollar is the Weatherby Vanguard series 2. its a heck of a nice rifle for the $ and it doesn't feel all plastic like alot of the synthetic stocks do now.

I've been eying up the S2 for awhile now. They seem to fit me really well, at least in the store. I prefer a detachable magazine though and yes I do know they you can purchase an adapter kit for them.

7-08 at the GP wss hasn't been there all last fall and winter, Barton's has quite a few different loads there.
Good choice, had a ruger ss in 7-08 but sold it to my buddy for his kid when I found one in 260. Then a marlin X7 ss/syn left the store with me.

Problem with that is the Detach kit that you can purchase seperatly for the vanguards ONLY fits .270, 25-06 and 30-06.
They dont make one for the 7-08 or any other caliber.........yet!

Yeah brass is hard to find, but put up a WTB post in buy sell and you may get some hits, that’s what did
I see the ammo at WWS in north Edmonton every time I looked, also you can order it on Cabelas website and select free shipping for in store pick up, that’s what I do for the items that never seem to stay on the shelf

Try the browning x-bolt with the dura touch stock if you can find one. My son had got his first and then my wife liked it so much that she got one as well. So we have two in 7-08, both are tack drivers.
