Default Backpack hatchet

Looking for a hatchet that will fit nicely in a pack. A gift for a son in law. Was thinking a wooden handle. Anyone on here forge them? Thanks buzzard

Default Fiskar

I have 14" Fiskar hatchet for backpacking. It is $40 at Canadian Tire (go on sale for $30) There are some very nice wood handled hatchets available but they cost a lot more such as Gransfor Bruk Wildlife hatchet $170. Husqvarna makes a more reasonable wood hatchet for about $55 on Amazon. I went with the Fiskar because it was the lightest. I would not get anything much shorter as it would make chopping down anything more than a small tree much harder.

It's about time you buried the hatchet with your son in law.

Default Back pack cutting edge

Maybe a machete in a scabbard strapped to the side of the back pack.

X2 on the Fiskars. It's a very practical hatchet.
Holds its edge well and is lightweight.

X3 for the 14" Fiskars - I've had mine for years and really abused it and somehow it still holds a good sharp edge. It's been along many miles with me through the backcountry and has even made do on a few car camping trips where we've forgotten the full size axe.

Husqvarna and Fiskars both good options, I have one of the Husky wood hadled hatchets linked above (bought em for my groomsmen) and they're great. I also have a full size Husky splitting axe with a handle design similar to the hollow Fiskars handles and I swear it is the greatest axe ever made.

The Gransfors hatchets are nice, I forget the model I have but it’s got a slightly longer handle. I like it.

I've carried this Gerber with the saw in the handle for a number of years now. Nice and light and does double duty if needed. If it's hunting pack you're looking to fill I think this one is pretty good. I picked mine up at Wholesale years ago, found similar on Amazon just as an example.

I met a fellow who was a regular seller at the Thorncliffe gun show here in Calgary. He is heavy into axes, knives, canes, hatchets, leather worker and native work.

He is a real nice guy and very reasonable.

I bought a Hulks Bruk hatchet/with handle from him, $25.

He has several sizes and several "makers" to choose from. He will sell the complete axe/hatchet or just the head; your choice.

Good luck,

It might be prudent to ask what he'll be doing with it. Lee valley had some very nice ones. However, they had a little 'skinning' hatchet that had a finger groove under part of the blade. Looked very handy for both field dressing game, and splitting kindling.

However, the one I'm talking about is not currently showing on their website.

I think you mean the Firestone belt axe.
