Default Calling on all AO Puppy Psychiatrists

Thinking of changing the name of our 15 week old Cocker Pup from Tikka to Sybil.

Wow
Every day is like waking up to a different dog.
From Spastic to Narcoleptic in 5 minute intervals.

Preferes to launch in the air over every obstacle rather than going around.

Flips her blanket in the air, runs under it and runs full speed blindly into walls. The thunk of impact is unnerving.

Is this just a phase or are some pups a little special?

Have your pups ever presented as a little unbalanced.

Might just be cabin fever , as the cold has kept us a little house bound.

What say you?

Thats normal, this phase should last about 1-2 years depending on the dog. Cabin fever may also be part of it. Try to keep your pup entertained with toys and games. A laser pointer will wear it fast.

I just was given my daughters 12 week old Aussie Sheppard pup to look after for a bit because of a move she had to make. Anyway, yep running into walls, jumping over everything, into everything and driving my old collie and me out of our mines. Not my first pup and everyone I have ever had was it’s own special level of nuts. I’m thinking you got a normal pup on your hands. 😂

My lab would go over to the neighbors house and they had a dog house with a dog mattress in the back yard. My dog would then rip the mattress out of the dog house and tear it to shreds. I offered to pay the neighbor for the damage but he thought it was more important for my dog to come over and play with his dog. In hind site I should have bought him a bottle of rum.

Non destructive behaviour which is great.

High energy, wants to do things on its own without coaxing --- nice to see in a pup. Sounds like you will have a high energy wanting to explore the new things dog.

To me this is excellent vs a pup that sits back and watches the world go by as everything is much to fast or they are afraid of the new. Get the pheasant wings out on a long string and let the games begin.

My guess is it's cabin fever. Puppy's need lots of outside time and a good walk 2-3 times a day for 20-30 minutes.

My 10 year old (yesterday) Golden has been getting stir crazy without being able to get to a dog park because of the cold. I do take her for 3 20-30 minutes a walk, less time though when her feet get cold.

Exercise is a dogs way to release energy.

Might also want attention.

Went for Valentine's day Dinner last night. Left 2 5 month old Shih Tzu pups in the house with more toys than Santa.

Came home to a shredded puppy pad, shredded paper bag, shredded .....

Seems that they think they are people too, and should have joined us for Dinner.

Separation anxiety?????.

Both, you'll see in a few years if it was just normal puppy behavior or if you have a special one

Yes, but behavior often gets misinterpreted and some people worry way too much about a dog showing completely normal dog behavior, often because they don't know the behavior or it doesn't fit their expectation of how a dog should behave.

Keep it busy! If you think a lack of physical playtime is an issue, keep it mentally working out. Teach it a few tricks (simple things like shake, high five etc), play hide and seek, let it find hidden objects, there are quite a few things to keep your dog from going nuts. 15-30 minutes helps already if we can't go out due to the cold.

Uh, what are you feeding it?

Eating poo is often a sign of malnutrition.
He could be missing/not absorbing something essential from his diet.

I'm pretty sure it takes five years before you have a dog.

My dog is gone ( car hit) , but as far as changing names goes, she got used to her new name in a couple weeks. She was 2 or so when I got her. Miss her a lot ( Kelpie breed)

That's just a puppy thing. They go thru their phases like children do. Also with this crappy cold weather probably a bit of excess energy....I hear kids are going crazy and beating each other because teachers can't cut them loose outside when it's 21 below or colder. So they been locked up all day long for 2 or 3 weeks. Older dogs know how to handle it just by looking outside but that takes years for them to figure out. Any change to a dog's day to day routine causes a bit of confusion and time to adjust. They like consistency, I swear our dog knows time by looking at the clock. He jumps up on the couch and stares out the window waiting for me to come home wether it's pitch black in winter or daylight. Amazing animals. Best thing that ever happened to our family. Just raise them right or they go sideways and it's tough to correct.

Had 2 Cockers now. Nice little dogs but they are a touch this side of a special needs coding. They start settling down at 2.5-3 years.
