Sure enjoy wildlife pics. Most saved are local to the farm. Juv sawhet owl and hummer on hollyhock are this year. Fav yellow bird is male yellow warbler of several years ago (shot through kitchen glass so some sharpness gone and backlit, but still a fav).

Some great pics posted. This was one of a pair of swallows that were busily feeding their chicks along the Bow River. Edit: Not sure why it posted sideways. Oh well.

I agree - an excellent thread and the quality of photos are superb.

What cameras and lens are you guys using and I would guess that some of you are using tripods?

Thanks for the picts

There was a few big battles in our yard this spring, they finally learned to live together & had a few young one's ...

D.

Mama Hummer had 2 as small as a peanut.

It's Sept 13th, still summer, see Jonathan Livingston Seagull ... aka ... Stanley out there ? He's sitting on #18 fairway of the Sylvan G&CC.

I use a Canon XSI with a 100 to 400 L series zoom lens, handheld most of the time. It has image stabilization so it can be handheld.

I'm not a birder but have lots of pictures of birds.
Mostly ones around the yard but some from holidays too.

Great images everyone, thanks for sharing these.
As I didn't grow up here I don't know most of these birds, can anyone recommend a good book to ID birds?

My go to bird identification books are;

The Sibley Feild Guide to Birds of Western North America by David Allen Sibley.
published by Alfred A Knopf

And;

Birds of Alberta by Chris Fisher & John Acorn
Published by Lone Pine Publishing.

I have six other Bird reference books but these two provide more information and better illustrations then most and I use them way more then all the other books I have, combined.

A Great Horned Owl, with breakfast(?) in his feet??

Two Merlin chicks, from a mated pair we had in the backyard this year.

Another Merlin photo that I took the other day, just lifting off!

First one for 2019 from Palm Springs went to pick a few oranges and spotted Mama Hummer, her nest is the size of a Toonie & made from spider web so it can stretch when the young hatch/grow. Mama's about the size of a peanut, will be interesting to see how many young she has.

There's an excellent Facebook group called 'Alberta Birds', with tons of fantastic photos added every day. Join up, read & follow the rules, and enjoy. Lots of people belong to the group that don't post photos- they just like to view other's bird shots.

Taken May 11th ... Mr. & Mrs. Loon were having some awkward fun this afternoon, the female swam up on shore on this small island in the middle of the lake, called the Male over and he did his thing, their legs are so far back on their body it was a struggle for him to get on top. I imagine 1 & 1 could make 3 or perhaps 4 in a few weeks.

D.

Same lake these two Canada's were staking claim on a 200 ft penthouse condo, never seen a Spruce Goose before, have you ?

Squirrel-proof bird feeder. You can set the sensitivity of the spring. Mine is set so that anything heavier than a Blue Jay will not be able to access the seed.

Black-footed and Laysan Albatrosses, off Tofino, BC:

Sooty Shearwaters, off Tofino:

American and Eurasian Widgeon, Red Deer County:

Female Dark-eyed ("Oregon") Junco

American Avocet, Irricana:

Default Recent Bird Sighting....

Here are a few Great Horned Owl nests that I have been following this spring. Four in total, only two that I have seen with Owlets in them so far.... the last is of a Yellow-Headed Blackbird that I was practicing my "panning" on.

Been your basic dog/ cat person for years until one of my sons wanted a cockatiel for Christmas a few years back.
I’m now a bird guy as well. Highly entertaining and way more intelligent than I realized.
Will let him out of his cage and the first thing he does is fly over to me and perch on my bald spot 😀 Would sit there happy as a clam if I let him, but being a bird he tend to crap where he perches 😁

My 6 year old daughter has been using Merlin Bird ID APP. She can snap a quick photo on my phone and it finds the species. She got a little note book by the window to keep track. Mostly Jays, chickadees and redpolls around us. Even set up the game camera on the feeder this winter. Got 4,000 images of blue jay throwing my seed on the ground.
