Default New to reloading... 55 grain v-max don't weigh 55 grains???

Relatively new to reloading but have done a little in the past. Getting setup to reload for my 22-250. Bought a brand new Hornady digital scale and was playing a bit with it tonight. I also bought a box of Hornady 55 gr v-max bullets and threw one on the scale for the heck of it... To my surprise 39.1 grains. Tried another and then another... All exactly the same 39.1 grains. The scale is calibrated, too, twice to make sure. Did I get a wacko box or am I missing something here???

Did the scale come with a test weight? Have you weighed any other bullets to compare?

Ummm, weigh some other bullets. Either you've got a wrong labeled box of bullets or your scale is OTL.

Try some 100 gr anythings, and maybe some 150 grain something's, or buy a set of check weights.

Definitely something wrong. Either the scale is not properly calibrated or you got 40 grain Vmax in a 55 grain box, though all the 40 grain Vmax I have all weigh 39.9 to 40.1 grains. Bullets weighing 39.1 would sound like Blitzkings made by Sierra.

Do other bullets weigh right on the same scale, if so definitely the bullets are WAY wrong. Those I would take back to store or call Hornady.

Post pics of the bullets/box, & one of the bullet on the scale.

And what brand/model of scale is it ?

I would be somewhat impressed if the Vmaxs are all weighing exactly the same, my Vmaxs never have, they are always a little different, similar to what Dean2 said.

I got it figured out. The bullets are fine. The scale is a bit weird to calibrate but I think I got it figured.

If I were you I would get a new scale or figure out your issue before you start weighing powder. No one needs a split barrel or missing arm over a 15 grain difference.

Wow, great job on catching that one for a new reloader! As coyotebutcher mentioned if it were the other way around (you were reloading 55gr thinking they were 40gr) that could lead to some serious consequence's.
It must have been a box packaged incorrectly. Just from my personal experience I always weigh 4-5 bullets when I open a new box for this very reason.
Another mistake I made ONCE was having more than 1 powder on the reloading bench while doing .223 Rem. I had to pull about 25 as I was unsure what I had in the powder measure. Now only 1 container on the bench at a time.
