Marlin all the way. Barring a few problem years the Marlin functioned better, had true side eject, and are easier to scope. The receivers are still made of real steel, and I believe have the advantage in accuracy. And directly compared to the 94, the 336 and 336 based 1895 contained bigger, heavy game cartridges. I like the way they lock up, and I speculate that they are overall a stronger gun.
And as Dick said, they are much easier to clean.
